In Short
  • Georgios Frangulis defended his relationship with Aryna Sabalenka against critics questioning his business commitments.
  • Frangulis and Sabalenka got engaged in March 2023 after meeting through her endorsement deal with his company, Oakberry.
  • Sabalenka is set to compete at the Madrid Open, entering as the defending champion after winning the tournament last year.

Aryna Sabalenka‘s fiancé, Georgios Frangulis, is often seen watching her matches from her player’s box, and for this very reason, he finds himself on the receiving end of criticism from some fans. These fans wonder how Frangulis, who is the CEO of the acai brand Oakberry, manages his business while attending her matches frequently.

The Brazilian businessman, in a video shared by Money Buys Happiness podcast on Instagram, addressed the criticism. He opened up about his relationship with the four-time Grand Slam singles champion and also gave a befitting response to the critics, saying it’s none of their business what he’s doing in his personal life.

For me to have someone that I love that trusts me and looks up to me, I can teach and learn from, with my fiancée. With Aryna, it’s all upside. I don’t see any downside. Believe me, I get s**t. How can he run the company. He’s always watching tennis. You see me on TV, and I am watching tennis. It’s a two-hour match. Like I was doing a meeting before, I’m gonna do another after. Not your f*****g business what I am doing. She’s super accomplished. We can enjoy each other’s success, help each other’s failures.

Georgios Frangulis said

Frangulis and Sabalenka met for the first time in January 2024 thanks to her endorsement deal with Oakberry. They made their relationship public later that year and got engaged in March this year, with Sabalenka later sharing the video of Frangulis proposing to her on her Instagram.

Well, March was, in fact, memorable for Sabalenka for other reasons as well. She took her revenge on Elena Rybakina in the Indian Wells final and later defeated Coco Gauff in the Miami Open final to complete the famous Sunshine Double.

Gabriela Sabatini on Aryna Sabalenka’s comment on women playing five-setters

When Aryna Sabalenka was asked about her views on women playing five-set matches in the Grand Slam events from the quarterfinal onward, she said the format would benefit her. Former WTA player Gabriela Sabatini, who actually played best-of-five in the WTA Finals, shared what she thinks about Sabalenka’s comments.

Yes, I think this is their decision, isn’t it? They should give their opinion on whether they like the idea or not. I can tell you that I played, I played twice in the Masters final that was played to five sets. I had to play a five-set match against Monica Seles. We played for almost four hours, I think, and it was a spectacular experience because it’s obviously different from what you usually play, but hey, it was just the final, right?

Gabriela Sabatini said during her interview with Gonzalo Ferreyra

Sabalenka will next be seen in action at the Madrid Open, the main draw of which is scheduled to start on April 21. The Belarusian ace, after her Brisbane International title defense, lost the final of the Australian Open, following which, she skipped the Qatar Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Sabalenka then completed the Sunshine Double and skipped the Stuttgart Open, where she had played four finals, including last year. In Madrid, Sabalenka will enter as the defending champion.

Last year, she defeated Gauff to win her third title in the tournament. Last year on the clay swing, after losing the Stuttgart Open final to Jelena Ostapenko and winning the Madrid Open by beating Gauff, Sabalenka reached the French Open final, but the American ace took her revenge in three sets. Sabalenka has become the fifth woman to complete the Sunshine Double and the first one after Iga Swiatek (2022).
