“No way I’d turn the team down”: Allyson Felix delays retirement as she runs one last time for the women’s 4x400m relay at World Championships

American track and field legend Allyson Felix recently ran the last race of her career- or so she thought. Her journey through 11 Olympic medals and 19 World Championship medals came to a sweet end at the World Championships this year. Felix took bronze in the 4x400m mixed relay event, as she cruised into the light. What she thought was her last race and medal of the season might not actually be the case anymore as she wears her shoes one last time for her teammates.
Felix is all set to race for one more event at this year’s World Championship– the prelims of the women’s 4x400m relay event. “The coaches asked if I was available and there was no way I’d turn the team down,” said Felix according to News18. The prelims of the women’s 4x400m event are on Saturday, and the finals will be held on Sunday to close out the 10 day Championship in Oregon.

“When I got the call, I locked in and refocused,” Felix said. She said that she was excited to run once again, especially for her team. Last year at the Tokyo Olympics, Felix was a part of the dream team in the event, with Sydney McLaughlin, Dalilah Muhammad and Athing Mu. They went on to extend their lead of the medals to 7.
“My best memories of this week are seeing my daughter cheer for me, seeing young women support me and having them thank me for standing up for them, and walking through the stadium and seeing women wearing Saysh,” Felix said.
