Paraskevi Papachristou, an Olympic athlete from Greece, was suspended from her country’s Olympic team for posting severely offensive comments on social media about the African Immigrants in her respective country.

The Olympic world was taken up by storm and Papachristou was immediately criticized for her ‘meaningless and tasteless joke’. Her take on the sensitive subject made her lose all the medal hopes in the London 2012 Games.

Paraskevi Papachristou lost her marbles and tweeted, “With so many Africans in Greece, at least the mosquitoes of West Nile will eat homemade food!!!”

“The SEGAS executive board met today and decided to suspend the benefits of the athlete Voula Papachristou from 01/04/2013 because of improper preparation and abstinence from competing,” said SEGAS in a statement following her racist tweet.

“I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights,” Paraskevi Papachristou wrote. “My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values.

“Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races. I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family.” added Paraskevi Papachristou.

Unfortunately, that apology was not enough to save her a spot for the London Games but must have given her a life lesson. A misconducted analogy was then uprising towards the illegal immigration from Africa and Asia contributing to increase anti-immigrant sentiments.

The co-ruling Democratic Left party in Greece added thereafter, “She can make as many vile ‘jokes’ as she likes on social-networking sites when she watches the Olympic Games on TV, but she certainly cannot represent Greece in London.”
