Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has set a lofty goal for his team. He wants the Bears to score the most points per game during the 2026 NFL season.
The preseason games are right around the corner, and when those end, Johnson will enter his second year as head coach with the Bears. His goal is not only to win the Super Bowl but also to score more points than any other team in the NFL.
You’ve got 31 other teams coming to training camp saying, ‘Our goal is to win the Super Bowl.’ I want more than that. I want to have the highest-scoring offense ever, which happens to be the 2013 Denver Broncos. I know how many points per game they scored [37.9], and I want to surpass them. I want shutouts. I want blowouts.

I spent a day with Bears coach Ben Johnson. He's more fascinating than you thought. My Story. https://t.co/kvfnxSWvo8 pic.twitter.com/xCLNbjmvo6

The 2013 Denver Broncos, led by Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, scored 37.9 PPG. The Atlanta Falcons came closest to catching the Broncos’ tally three years later, when they managed 33.8 points per game. In the pre-NFL/Super Bowl era, the Rams scored 38.8 PPG in 1950.
It won’t be an easy task to complete for the Bears. They will play the toughest schedule in 2026. According to the NFL Schedule, the Bears’ opponents had a record of 158-129-2/0.550 in 2025.
Ben Johnson sends a message to the doubters of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams
The success of the Bears rests on the shoulders of third-year signal-caller Caleb Williams. Despite showcasing an improved second year, experts still doubt Williams’ abilities. In layman’s terms, the Bears are among the favorites to experience a down year.

Only a great year from Williams will save the Bears from languishing in NFL purgatory. Johnson has complete faith in Williams to make that happen.
Before Johnson was Williams’ coach, he heard the questions. Is accuracy a problem? Could he play within a structured offense? Does he lack sufficient processing speed?’ Johnson wasn’t sure then. He is now.

According to Pompei, Johnson doesn’t have “any concerns in those areas” related to Williams.
[Caleb] showed it to me. Now it’s just a matter of time.

How was Ben Johnson’s first year with the Bears?
Before Johnson took over as the head coach, the Bears had gone four seasons without playing postseason football, including Williams’ first year in the league. The Bears drafted Williams first overall in 2024, but the former USC starter struggled to deliver wins. According to Williams, he had hit rock bottom.
Johnson pulled him back up from the depths of despair. The Bears began last season with back-to-back defeats, even conceding 50+ points to Johnson’s former team, the Detroit Lions. That game changed something in the Bears.
In week three, the Bears defeated the Cowboys, and the following game edged the Raiders by just one point before heading into a bye week. After the break, the Bears posted a 9-2 record, which included an overtime victory over rivals the Green Bay Packers.
Chicago finished the regular season with an 11-6 record. They could have had an even better record by winning the following two games. However, that record was enough for them to win the NFC North for the first time since 2018.
Caleb Williams’ accuracy (58.1%) was all over the place. And yet, he had the most fourth-quarter wins of any quarterback last year. Williams finished with 330 completions for 3942 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.
In the wildcard round, the Bears faced the Packers again (the third time of the season). Williams threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns and a couple of interceptions in a 31-27 victory. Williams’ lacklustre form continued in the divisional playoff game against the Rams. He threw three INTs and had a passer rating of 59.3% as the Bears lost 20-17.
The Bears play three preseason games against the Browns, Bengals, and the Titans. In week one, they travel to Carolina to play the Panthers.
