Bill Belichick’s first year with the North Carolina Tar Heels did not go as experts had predicted. UNC not only missed the playoffs but also finished with a losing record in the ACC.

That was last year, but 2026 has brought renewed optimism in the UNC camp. Belichick has made significant changes to the roster. However, unlike 2025, when he brought in 70 players, the coaches have completed player recruitment the traditional way.

According to UNC PR, new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has overseen the recruitment of 40 freshmen, including a couple of quarterbacks. Belichick ditched the previous method because last year the high school recruitment portal had ended by the time UNC announced him as the new coach.

Overall… as a football team, our culture, our program, our ability to operate as a team is much higher than it was a year ago… and our talent level is higher.

Ahead of the 2025 college football season, UNC shocked the football world by hiring eight-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick as the new head coach. Experts envisioned the Tar Heels giving Miami tough competition in the ACC. However, UNC ended the year with a 4-8 record. Miami, meanwhile, qualified for the CFP final, where they lost to Indiana. Nonetheless, Belichick has expressed confidence in the Tar Heels’ progress, saying the program is “way ahead” of where it was a year ago and calling the improvement “night and day.”

How does the UNC quarterback situation look in Belichick’s second year?

UNC had a myriad of transfer quarterbacks to choose from in 2025. Belichick went with South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez as his starting quarterback, with Max Johnson, Au’Tori Newkirk and Bryce Baker filling the rest of the allotted slots.

Lopez played most of the snaps, followed by Johnson and Newkirk, who played in just one game. Baker did not even feature, and he transferred to Virginia Tech in the offseason. Johnson joined his fourth college team, Georgia Southern, and Lopez is now part of the Wake Forest setup.

According to The Fayetteville Observer, Belichick and UNC have added two new transfer quarterbacks to their roster, while Newkirk is the only one returning and a freshman signal-caller.

Billy Edwards Jr. played for the Wisconsin Badgers, and Miles O’Neill was QB2 at Texas A&M last year. 6-foot-4, 193-pound Travis Burgess, a Grayson High School graduate, committed to UNC earlier this year. Burgess has participated in the prestigious Elite 11 Finals, which feature the nation’s top high school QBs.

We’ll see how the competition goes with all four of those guys. They all have strong points; they all have some things to offer… We’ll see how they do with competition in training camp and then into the season.

Belichick said during the league’s preseason media days

UNC will kick off the 2026 season by facing TCU, a school that thrashed the Tar Heels 48-14 last season. The game will take place in Ireland in week zero. UNC also has games against Clemson, Notre Dame, Miami, Louisville, and Virginia.
