Every NFL season, some or the other team or player throws up a surprise that makes headlines. For the first two games, it was Derek Carr and the high-flying New Orleans Saints. But after their stinker against the Philadelphia Eagles, the new no. 1 on people’s minds is the season Sam Darnold is having with the Minnesota Vikings. Even bringing coaching great Bill Belichick to take shots at the New York Jets.
The multiple-time Super Bowl-winning coach was speaking on the Pat McAfee Show. While talking about developing quarterback situations across the league, Belichick showered some love on the 2018 Draft’s No. 3 pick.
Everybody has liked Darnold, expect the Jets. People in Carolina that I've talked to, they've really liked him. I know that Kevin and some of the coaches in Minnesota, they really like this guy too. Seem like the only people who didn't like Darnold were the Jets.Bill Belichick said
Bill Belichick was taking shots at the New York Jets as they did not stick with Sam Darnold even though he was their draft pick. Instead, since leaving, he has steadily grown into a quarterback everyone likes.
It is remarkable to see that the backup is leading the league in touchdowns. He was supposed to help bring JJ McCarthy along, but instead, he is making other quarterbacks in the league look below average. Belichick focused on that point, as he felt, the New York Jets could have had this version of Darnold had they stuck with him.
Instead, the New York team sent him away and drafted another rookie who again they let go. Now they are in a Super Bowl or bust mode with Aaron Rodgers. Had they kept Darnold, they could have continuously improved on their way to building a Super Bowl-caliber roster.
Sam Darnold will not miss time due to knee injury
After such a hot start, those at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis were left with their hands over their heads when Sam Darnold sat down for a play with an apparent knee injury. Even though he played the remainder of the game, Minnesota Vikings fans waited with bated breath to learn of any updates.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero came out with an update a few hours before.
QB Sam Darnold’s MRI revealed a knee bruise and no structural damage, per source.Tom Pelissero revealed on his official X account
This indicates that Darnold might be limited in practice for the first couple of days. But he should be good to play the upcoming battle of the backups against the Green Bay Packers.
This should come as a relief for Vikings fans as they have already lost the leading rookie before even playing a regular season game. Now had Darnold missed time, it would have put a lid on their remarkable run this season.
