It’s not looking good for Bill Belichick. North Carolina’s widening inquiry into its football program has already coincided with general manager Michael Lombardi’s resignation and questions surrounding defensive coordinator Steve Belichick’s behavior. If UNC continues on this trajectory, it will eventually reach Bill Belichick.

UNC appointed Belichick as head coach last season. The Tar Heels finished with a 4-8 record and did not even qualify for a bowl game.

That said, the changes in coaching and in the Tar Heels’ roster brought back the initial hype that evaporated by the end of the 2025 season. But a new and disturbing issue has arisen in recent weeks.

DC Steve Belichick missed time in the offseason, which Bill Belichick later claimed was due to medical reasons. However, a section of college football media did not buy his explanation. Last month, UNC sent GM Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave. On September 3, the school announced that Lombardi had resigned from his post.

Effective Sept. 3, 2026, Michael Lombardi has resigned from his position as General Manager of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s football program. The university will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns.

All this transpired amidst an ongoing investigation reported by WRAL. According to the publication, authorities received complaints from students who alleged s**ual relationships between staff members and players or other staffers. Moreover, the students also alleged that Steve Belichick “used drugs on the job or provided drugs to at least one player.”

It’s unclear whether Bill Belichick knew about the situation. But if the investigation leads back to Belichick, he might lose his job. If it comes to that, only Section C of Article 11 of his contract becomes his saving grace, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

Per Florio, Article 11(c) gives UNC a path to terminate him for cause in certain situations involving conduct by Belichick or people he supervises, including conduct “known by Coach” and not properly reported when it ultimately leads to a material disciplinary finding, action, or sanction.

UNC guaranteed Belichick the first three years of his $50 million contract. But on the grounds of ‘For cause,’ UNC possesses leverage. If the investigation finds a link between the allegation and Bill Belichick, Chapel Hill can terminate the 74-year-old’s contract without owing him any salary, bonuses, or supplemental income.

ESPN analyst claimed UNC made a mistake hiring Bill Belichick

In December 2024. Chapel Hill declared Bill Belichick a Tar Heel’s 35th head coach in the program’s history. Per reports, Belichick signed a contract that will pay him $10 million annually, with the first three years guaranteed, and $3.5 million in annual incentives.

In 2025, UNC won games against Charlotte, Richmond, Syracuse, and Stanford. Their heaviest defeats came against TCU, UCF, North Carolina State, and Clemson.

Belichick claimed that the current UNC roster is superior in every metric to last year’s Tar Heels. In week one, they defeated TCU, to whom they conceded 48 points in the last fixture.

With WRAL’s report now out for everyone to see, it could affect the players’ and coach’s morale, essentially bringing a swift end to Belichick’s tenure. ESPN’s Kevin Clark noted that UNC made a big mistake by hiring Belichick based on his NFL pedigree of eight Super Bowl victories.

The [Michael] Lombardi saga has brought more embarrassment to it, and now we have the Steve Belichick investigation; it’s not gonna work from a football perspective and hasn’t worked from an on-field perspective… Yes, they should regret hiring Bill Belichick, and yes, I think it will end sooner rather than later.

Clark said on First Take

Up next, UNC hosts East Tennessee State, followed by games against Clemson, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Duke, Syracuse, Miami, UConn, Louisville, Virginia, and NC State.
