In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and invoked a war against them. Vasiliy Lomachenko, being a compassionate Ukranian, put a halt to his boxing career. He ensured to travel back to his homeland and defend his country against the Russians. The fighter spent five months as a soldier in the conflict. Lomachenko posted a picture on Instagram of himself in an army uniform.

During his time as a soldier, Vasiliy Lomachenko’s manager confirmed that he was not in danger. He said, “He’s [Vasiliy Lomachenko] doing good. He’s in a safe place in Ukraine. He’s in the corner. The place where he’s at, it’s not a war zone. He’s not in a war zone.” His manager, Egis Klimas, assured fans that the Ukranian is devoid of danger in his country.

What was Vasiliy Lomachenko’s role in the army?

Following his enlistment in the army, a lot of speculations came alongside them. One of them was his role as a soldier. Vasiliy Lomachenko was a part of the Counterterrorism Defense Battalion of Belgorod-Dniéster. He was in charge of protecting his hometown in the country. The fighter did not engaged in combat and was reported to be safe during his time in the army.

Eventually, Vasiliy Lomachenko was given special treatment. He was allowed to cut his time short in the army and travel back to Los Angeles to defend his titles. Following his departure, the Ukrainian boxer claimed the war had changed him as a person. “That whole situation, of course, changed me as an individual, but it did not change me as a boxer. I’m the same boxer with a love of boxing, with the dedication and the goals that I want to achieve,” said Lomachenko to TMZ.
