Canelo Alvarez is one of the biggest names in boxing right now. The middle weight champion has indicated that he will fight Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight instead of fighting Dmitry Bivol in a rematch. Canelo was the Pound-for-pound best boxer however, his loss against Dimitry has caused him to lose his position.

Canelo Alvarez made a bold move to move up the weight class to fight Dmitry Bivol at Light-heavyweight, but this decision turned out badly for the middleweight champ. Dimitry outboxed Canelo and won the fight via a unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 115-113 in favor of Dimitry, however the fight was not close at all.

Canelo talked about using the rematch clause and fighting Dimitry again in a rematch however, it seems Canelo Alvarez has changed his mind about the rematch. Canelo is now looking to move back to 168 and defend his title against Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight.

Talking in a press conference to promote a new golf venture, Canelo Alvarez said: “We already had that contract, that deal, so we have to continue what we started. And I think they are the two most important fights in boxing—the fight with Golovkin and the rematch with Bivol because unfortunately we lost, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to try again. The important thing here is perseverance and we are going to do it again….What is certain is that we will return in September and these days, today, tomorrow, the day after, we are going to announce the fight, only we have to wait a little.”

Fans seem to be upset about Canelo fighting Gennady in a trilogy fight instead of fighting Dmitry Bivol in a rematch. Gennady is currently 40 years old and is past his prime and may fans believe this fight will only tarnish Gennady’s legacy.

Gennady and Canelo fought twice in their career, and Gennady’s only defeat has been through the hands of Canelo in 2018. Fans feel Canelo is avoiding Dmitry Bivol and is using Gennady as an excuse to duck him. Some fans also claim Canelo is ducking the new interim champion David Benavidez who became champion by defeating David Lemieux in the third round of their fight.
