Conor Benn is on the verge of facing longtime rival/middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr. The bout is set to take place somewhere early next year. This matchup has spanned more than a year gap with failed drug tests and other issues. Now, the fighter wants to ensure his bout will not be marked by the absence of one key figure – Chris Eubanks Sr.
Eubank Sr. recently blasted his son in the media labelling him a “money man.” He has also grudgingly taken a keen interest in the career of his nephew, Harlem Eubank, possibly out of deference. Speaking to IFL TV, this is what Conor Benn has said:
Of course I want Sr. there in Jr.’s corner. Whatever that is it needs to be sorted out. Whatever that is. Listen, when everything is all gone, when everything is said and done, when there’s no boxing, there’s no career, who’s gonna be in my career? My dad. That’s all that matters, whatever it is. I just hoped that it gets sorted out. I hope Eubank Sr. is there. This fight is happening because of Eubank Sr. This fight is happening because of Nigel Benn. How are you not there? You’re not there. Your nephew ain’t the same...Conor Benn via IFL TV.
Benn’s two failed drug tests remained the curse of British professional boxing for the last year. He has repeatedly instigated his innocence and has clashed with governing bodies in his native UK. This included the British Boxing Board of Control and UK Anti-Doping.
Eddie Hearn, Benn’s promoter, is pushing for the fight to take place on home soil. Even though Benn remains ineligible to fight in England. Hearn floated London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a possible venue. Benn also hopes for Eubank Jr. and Eubank Sr, to sort out their issue so that the fight could become grand.
Chris Eubank Sr weighs in on rivalry with the Benn family and latest opposition
Conor Benn is set to fight Chris Eubank Jr. in the first quarter of next year. Additionally, the fighter has advocated for mending a rift between the opponent and his father. It is important to note that Conor’s father, Nigel Benn, and Eubank Sr. competed against each other in the 1990s.
Eubank Sr. has previously prompted Benn to stick to fighting welterweights, like nephew Harlem. He has made social media rounds in support of the fighter. While he admired Benn’s commitment to honoring his father’s legacy, he had things to say about the father pushing this fight. On the subject matter, he said to Boxing Social:
Conor really just wants to get one for his dad. And I admire that. But the father is wrong! He’s wrong. He shouldn’t be leading him down that path. His career is not about Chris Eubank Jr. His career is about the champions at 147. If you want to win over a Eubank, you’re only going to get it through Harlem...Chris Eubank Sr. via Boxing Social.
The nephew has called out Benn many times. Moving up from 147lbs. he has mentioned Benn to be on his list next. In the latest interview with IFL TV, Eubanks Sr. has weighed in on the rivalry with the Benn family.
Eddie Hearn, Benn’s fight promoter, had mentioned moving up from 157 to 160lbs to face Eubank Jr. However, Eubank Sr. remains critical of such weight changes that could end up hurting fighters in the process. He has proclaimed that he and his “young Marshall” – Harlem, would stop Benn. He also said that this rivalry was set in stone since ages past and did not need such amends.
