Cris Cyborg and Katie Taylor boxing match in talks
The boxing aspirations of former UFC champion and current Bellator MMA champion Cris Cyborg might actually come true. The legendary women’s MMA fighter is in talks to land a super boxing fight against the undisputed lightweight champion, Katie Taylor.
Irish boxing champion Katie Taylor’s blockbuster boxing match against Amanda Serrano has opened the doors for several other super fights in women’s boxing. Currently, the Irish champion is in the talks to fight women’s MMA featherweight champion Cris Cyborg in a professional boxing match. Several reports have emerged regarding the fight between the two female combat sports stars and it looks like fight fans might actually get to see two greats from two different fight worlds cross paths in the boxing ring.
In April, Katie took on Amanda Serrano in a blockbuster boxing match at the historic Madison Square Garden. This is considered to be the biggest women’s fight of all time as the two female boxers headlined the Meccah of boxing. A close split decision win made sure that the entire world paid more attention to women’s boxing and now the Irish boxer might have just landed her another big-money fight against the UFC and Bellator MMA star.
Michael Benson on Twitter reported the news from Chris Mannix, who is a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, about the Taylor vs Cyborg boxing match. “Katie Taylor vs Cris Cyborg is reportedly in talks to potentially take place as a boxing match in December. Cyborg is an MMA legend and former UFC champion, but has not had a professional boxing match before,” wrote Benson.
Cris Cyborg is all invested in “the biggest fight in women’s boxing”
Recently, following the statement of Katie’s promoter of Matchroom Boxing, Eddie Hearn, Irish Mirror reached out to the MMA star to ask about her interest in fighting one of the greatest boxers of all time. Cyborg could not be more invested in a super fight like this. “I have told my management I am ready to sign a contract for my first professional boxing fight, the time is now,” says Cris talking to the Irish news outlet.
Cris is currently undefeated as a Bellator MMA fighter. She reigns as the champion in the featherweight division and fights as a 145-pounder. In case of a fight against Taylor, the MMA star would have to cut down around 10 pounds to fight within the same limit. Cyborg is coming off a title defense against Arlene Blencowe at Bellator 279. Cris is a veteran in the sport of MMA and has a record of 26-2-1 in her long career.
“I think it would be an honor to challenge myself against a legend like Katie Taylor and doing it in front of a stadium of 80,000 is the type of nights you dream about,” said Cyborg in a potential fight against Taylor in the boxing ring.
