Dmitry Bivol shook the world when he pulled one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Bivol managed to defeat Canelo Alvarez via unanimous decision and retain his WBA light heavyweight title. While not many believed in Bivol, undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather was rooting for the Russian boxer. Floyd Mayweather won over $50 thousand after betting on Dmitry Bivol.
The bout between Dmitry Bivol and Canelo Alvarez took place on 7th May 2022 at 175 lbs. Canelo had a very active schedule before his fight against Bivol. He managed to defeat boxers like Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant all in one year. Canelo became the undisputed middleweight champion and wanted to create history by going up for the light heavyweight title against Dmitry Bivol. However, Dmitry Bivol was not one to lose so easily. Bivol put up a tough fight and used his reach advantage to good use. All three judges scored the card 115- 113 for Bivol to win by unanimous decision.
This was a massive win for Bivol as he was a huge underdog going into the fight. However, boxing legend Floyd Mayweather believed in the Russian boxer’s skillset. He placed $10 thousand on Bivol to win his match against Canelo. Floyd ended up making around $52k through his bet and posted it on his social media accounts as well. When Bivol came to know about this, he congratulated the undefeated boxer. ” Congratulations Floyd and congratulations all guys who bet on me and won today,” said Bivol.
Canelo Alvarez has only two losses in his professional career. One of the losses comes from Floyd Mayweather when Canelo was still a young and budding boxer. Mayweather still believes if both fighters had fought in their prime he would still win. After his loss against Bivol, Canelo won his trilogy fight with GGG. He looks forward to a rematch with Bivol after his fight with John Ryder.
Canelo Alvarez wants to avenge his loss against Dmitry Bivol
Canelo Alvarez wants to avenge his loss to WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. Alvarez fought Bivol at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas last year. Bivol managed to pull an upset and defeated Canelo Alvarez via unanimous decision. However, Alvarez was not finished after his loss. After his fight with Bivol, Canelo defeated long-time opponent GGG via unanimous decision and asked for a rematch.
According to Canelo’s management, they wanted a tune-up fight for Canelo to see how he feels and then challenge Bivol in September. So Canelo will move forward as per the plan and fight WBO interim World Super Middle champion John Ryder in May. However, Bivol is uninterested in the idea of a possible rematch.
“I don’t care to be honest, I don’t want to depend on his decisions for who he wants to fight. I just want to fight, I want to fight for four belts. If I don’t get this fight, then give me another fight and I will be patient,” said Bivol in an interview.
Canelo’s management team, however, is reluctant to the rematch. Eddie Hearn revealed the rematch might happen at 168 pounds. However, it is still not agreed and the bout might take place at 175 lbs again.
