Brandel Chamblee Faces Tremendous Heat From Golf Fans Following His Take on Bryson DeChambeau’s 2-Shot Penalty at The Open
Brandel Chamblee claimed it was a "clear violation" from Bryson DeChambeau at the 5th hole during the 2nd round and justified his 2-shot penalty.

Brandel Chamblee once again found himself under tremendous heat from golf fans on Friday. The Golf Channel analyst blasted Bryson DeChambeau after the LIV Golf star was handed a 2-shot penalty at The Open Championship.
DeChambeau fired a score of 67 in the opening round at The Open hosted at Royal Birkdale. He came into this event having missed the cut in the first 3 majors of the year.
On Friday, he seemed to have carded a round of 66 with 5 birdies and 1 bogey. When he ended the round, he was 1 shot behind leader Lucas Herbert, who shot a score of 62.
However, the R&A officials took DeChambeau back to the 5th hole. On the par-4 hole, the American had made his only bogey of the day.
Chief Referee Grant Moir and the tournament officials determined that the 2-time major champion had breached Rule 8.1 and improved his lie. The golfer did take some practice swings and walked back and forth to his ball lying in the thick.
They handed him a 2-shot penalty, taking his 2nd round score from 66 to 68 and turning his bogey into a triple bogey. He fell from solo 2nd to T5 and ended the day 3 shots behind Herbert.

This ruling from the R&A did not sit well with the fans. Many came forward and supported DeChambeau while taking a shot at the officials. However, not everyone was on the side of the golfer.
Brandel Chamblee, who has many times blasted DeChambeau, slammed him again. While discussing this with Paul McGinley with Rich Lerner, the former PGA Tour star claimed that it was a “clear violation” and labeled DeChambeau’s actions as “childish.”
This was such a clear violation. It is really hard to stomach the silliness that we have seen here from Bryson. You accept this like a man. … And just to underscore how childish it is of him, to say he doesn’t know if he’s going to play.

"There were multiple infractions here. He just danced all over the path behind the golf ball…He did everything but take a weed wacker to the tall grass” @BrysonLegion
Do you agree with Brandel? https://t.co/UvkL4q2X3V
There were talks that DeChambeau would not play on Saturday following this ruling. He did take some practice swings in the evening and later took to his X account to confirm his participation in the third round. He will tee off with Sam Burns at 3:30 p.m. British Time.

The worst media personality in golf and it’s not close. Brandel is as stupid as his name. He’s a miserable human being and the sooner he’s off of my television, the sooner I can unmute the TV. I get dumber listening to that loser speak.

Predictable take. He’s gonna be insufferable all night tonight
— Drew T (@andrewt2525) July 17, 2026
Screw off Brandel! We know you hate LIV players and Bryson.
— Chad Harsma (@ChadHarsma) July 17, 2026
It’s so obvious how much they hate Bryson
— carbon (@carbon261995) July 17, 2026
Bryson could cure cancer, and Brandel would find a way to complain about it. Doesn’t surprise me at all that this loser is saying this.

Of course, douche bag Chamblee is gonna say that. The guys a total scumbag.

Brandel Chamblee won a singular PGA event in 1996, at a Chuck E Cheese located in a strip mall..
— Chase Harrell (@Harrell_2016) July 17, 2026
Yet has the audacity to provide arrogant, bias and offensive commentary against players he personally doesn’t like.
Wheel this dude off a cliff and get him off the TV.
I hope Bryson wins solely so Chamblee is forced to talk about him Sunday night. In a world filled with bitter and terrible media personalities, Brandel is still comfortably the worst!

Seriously? @GolfChannel ? Why should a player "graciously" accept a penalty that they honestly feel that they didn't deserve? If someone shows me a DEFINITIVE camera angle that showed his swing path was improved then there should be a penalty. But for a commentator to state that…

Dear @GolfChannel Please fire @chambleebrandel for goodness sakes. His comments against Bryson Dechambeau are biased, inflammatory, vicious and obviously with vile intentions. He's an embarrassment to his profession and to your network.

If DeChambeau can pull off the win from this position, it will likely go down as one of the finest major wins in recent years. His best finish in this event came in 2022 when he finished T8.
Brandel Chamblee had taken a shot at Bryson DeChambeau before the start of The Open as well
Bryson DeChambeau’s performances in the majors this year had been a huge talking point. The 32-year-old, who had 3 top-10 finishes in the majors last year, had missed 3 straight cuts in them for the first time in his career. Before The Open this week, Brandel Chamblee took a shot at him for this.

While speaking about him, Chamblee claimed he went from battling against some of the big names on the PGA Tour to trying to outdo every YouTube golfer.
He went from chasing Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to chasing Grant Horvat. It’s like he wants to outdo every YouTuber in the game.

This was not the first time he had thrown a dig at DeChambeau regarding YouTube. Last year in September, he took issue with his YouTube popularity and called out the golfer for talking about it more than the Ryder Cup.
Speaking of his YouTube, DeChambeau has over 2.78 million subscribers and 281 videos.
