Brandon Aiyuk hopes to play for another team in 2026 despite still being under contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Football fans have started to listen to Brandon Aiyuk speak over the past few days, more than at any other time he has throughout the entirety of last season. Unsurprisingly, most of it is about the San Francisco 49ers.
Their relationship has reached a point where he is known to have left the squad, but still shows up as a reserve member of the roster.
Throughout the entire last season, the 28-year-old did not say a word. Not to the press, not to his teammates, and nothing to his coaches and the front office.
Now that he is out on his own, the Arizona State alum has chosen to take to social media to reveal what went on during the 2025 season.
After earlier suggesting that the 49ers did not know how to utilize him, and that the football world is about to know the truth, Aiyuk returned on IG Live to say this:
You wanna know why they really mad tho? They mad because they stupid… They mad because they paid me $50 million in 8 months. And then voided my guarantees for 2027. And I’m about to be on a new team in 2026. They mad at themselves.
Brandon Aiyuk said
Clearly, this was a shot at the team that handed him a massive extension despite his obvious disinterest in continuing to play for them. The California native was essentially trolling the 49ers for paying him that much money and then trying to correct course by voiding his 2027 guarantees.

Aiyuk claims this entire situation has made the franchise look ‘dumb,’ whereas he ended up pocketing generational wealth without playing a single snap last season.
Were the 49ers’ ‘dumb’ for paying Brandon Aiyuk?
When Brandon Aiyuk first made it clear that he wanted to be paid with a contract his performances deserved, many analysts were quick to agree with that notion.

They felt that Kyle Shanahan‘s offense needs strong, big-bodied receivers capable of affecting the game in the intermediaries. Therefore, the former 25th overall pick and his former teammate, Deebo Samuel, were perfect.
With that system in place, the 49ers managed to reach a Super Bowl. But that was the last bit of success the team enjoyed. Since then, everything has been hurtling down the hill, and Samuel was the first to move.
Aiyuk also wanted to do so and made it clear he wanted to play with former college teammate Jayden Daniels. At that time, some analysts felt that letting the WR go would end the team’s efficiency on offense.
Those conversations, along with the fact that the franchise did not have apt replacements for both Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, may have prompted them to hand the latter a four-year, $120 million contract extension.
Now, as per the 2023 second-team All-Pro, the 49ers made a mistake handing over that much. Maybe he was trying to tell them that he wanted out, and now they are paying the price for not listening to him.
Brandon Aiyuk may be right, but his future depends on what 49ers agree to
The San Francisco 49ers may have been ‘stupid’ to offer Brandon Aiyuk that contract, even though he wanted to leave. But now, no matter what the pass catcher says, his future is not in his hands.
He did claim in his latest video that he will be playing for another team. As easy as it sounds, it is not. It so happens that the organization is hoping to recoup something in a trade. Considering his attitude and recent tryst with the law, that may be a pipe dream.
They have made it clear that he will not play for the team again, but have also kept him away from their salary cap by placing him on the reserve list.
Now that June 1st has passed, the 49ers can release him and split the remaining $33.6 million in dead money over the next two years. However, they can choose not to do that either.
Staying on the reserve list means Aiyuk will not earn a penny. Moreover, once he does not report to the mandatory training camp in July, they can start levying fines. From what other athletes have faced in the past, those numbers can be quite something.
Therefore, not only can the 49ers keep him on their reserve, not pay him, and recoup some of their money through fines. But they can also basically stop him from playing anywhere else, at least until his current contract expires.
