23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace and the reigning Chip champion of Team Penske Racing, Ryan Blaney shares one of the closest friendships among the current Cup grid. The Toyota and Ford drivers has been friends since they started racing together in the teenage years. They have a really similar character of being aggressive on the track as well as being animated on the team radio.

While talking about his friend Ryan Blaney’s radio antics, Bubba Wallace highlighted the double standard NASCAR fans have in addressing this. He pointed out that when it comes to the No:12 driver, the actions are often perceived as gestures out of passion, while he gets often criticized for doing the same.

This guy can drive around b****ing, screaming, throwing the bird. ‘Oh man, he’s passionate.’ Bubba Wallace gets out and flips off his manager behind camera, ‘He just flipped off America, f*** him!’ What?!
Bubba Wallace said via Stacking Pennies podcast.

The TRD driver can’t be blames for the comments, as the hate he receives on and off the track are mostly of malicious intent and often is done for the sake of ridiculing him. Him being the face of NASCAR’s diversity initiative, his role in the controversial decision to the confederate flag at NASCSAR tracks and his high-profile run-ins are mostly the reasons for it.

Bubba Wallace breaks down the team radio dynamic of him and crew chief Bootie Baker

The 23XI driver has a very close relationship with his crew chief Bootie Baker who has been a massive part of his success in the sport. But despite the friendship, Walace often says “sh*t” on team radio to Baker during the racer, but he is very understanding of the racers’ feelings. His experience playing football in the past helps as well.

Also he’s [Bootie] the type like, okay we’re boys, so whatever you say to me I know you’re pissed off in the moment. I’m not going to get hurt feelings. And he’ll tell you ‘Dude I’ve played football all my life, I had it way worse than what you say.’ So, it’s like having people understand that instead of going back to the shop the next day and everybody’s butthurt. Because we say s**t, we’re in the car for three and a half hours.
Bubba Wallace said.

While Bubba Wallace does sometimes go over board with his rants on team radio, he has a team that knowns he doesn’t mean most of it and it is just the product of frustration and adrenalin like many of his fellow racer. This understanding and mutual respect is a major factor of his success with the 23XI team.
