Over the past few days, most of the conversations surrounding Caitlin Clark have been about her behavior on the court and off it.

The Indiana Fever superstar is known for having two sides. When she is not competing, the Iowa native is as kind, humorous, and down-to-earth as anyone can be.

On the court, that changes. Not only is she ultra-competitive, but her passion to win and play well fuels that aggressiveness.

She taunts opponents, gets in their faces, and even baits them into talking back to her. All of these tactics are similar to those of the world’s greatest athletes.

They all want that extra fire and motivation to push them towards greater things, and Caitlin Clark is no exception. The only problem is that some believe it is showing a negative side of her.

The point guard has pointed out how those traits make her who she is, but reporters keep coming back with the same question, especially since the chatter on social media is not stopping anytime soon.

I don’t think I would be as good a player if I was very stoic and straight-faced all the time. I think you always want your mind to be neutral. But you also wanna be excited and passionate and fiery and fiesty… That’s what’s so fun about competitive sports…The fire and the passion, that’s what makes me me.

The 24-year-old closed her response by suggesting that she should probably lean more into her trash talk and fiery side, as that is what is bringing her joy while playing basketball.

This was Caitlin Clark talking to reporters before the Fever’s away game against the Washington Mystics. The last time these two sides met, it was a showcase, with the home team snatching a win in overtime before an Indiana crowd.

In this game, after trailing in the first half, the Mystics came back strong in the second half. With the game threatening to be exactly like that overtime loss, Clark came up strong.

Just a few seconds before the end, the Hawkeyes’ great missed two free throws that could have seen them lose their sixth game this season.

But then, with a little more than four seconds to go, Sophie Cunningham launched a cross-court inbounds pass. Clark had already beaten rookie Cotie McMahon to her spot.

The latter, in her attempts to cover ground, tried to intercept the pass. But the ball reached the Fever guard, and with acres of space, she calmly shot the game-winning three-pointer.

After sealing the game, the two-time All-Star turned around and flashed three fingers with both hands towards McMahon. The two were rivals when the latter was with Ohio State. Therefore, this was just her dipping into her fiery side to seal the deal on an otherwise average shooting night.

Caitlin Clark’s head coach defends her on-court behavior

After Caitlin Clark hit that game-winner, her teammates rushed towards her to celebrate. The Fever have not enjoyed a great run so far, which explains why they were so relieved to win this battle.

Her head coach was also relieved, watching her team hold on despite the obvious pressure from the home side. After the game, Stephanie White was asked about the noise surrounding her leading superstar’s on-court behavior, to which she replied:

I don’t know that the noise is ever going to be quiet. This is what Caitlin does. She makes big shots, and she has big moments.

Stephanie White said

The coach knows all too well how the narratives have formed over the past few days, as she was smack dab in the middle of it. Therefore, she does not expect them to subside, but she also made it clear that Clark is going to do what she wants.
