The Chicago Bears have admired Caleb Williams’ playmaking since his Heisman campaign with USC. Chicago gave up the chance to draft either Bryce Young or CJ Stroud in 2023 to take Williams first overall a year later.

Although Williams won five games in his debut NFL campaign, which got his head coach fired, analysts and fans raved about his skills with the ball and his arm talent. The following year, he won the NFC North crown and ended the Bears’ playoff drought.

The Bears hosted the 4-2 Patriots on Thursday night after posting the same record from their first six games. Chicago led by six points in the third quarter when Williams displayed a glimpse of his arm strength.

Fans praise Caleb Williams’ connection with Rome Odunze

The Bears selected Washington alum Rome Odunze just eight picks after Williams in 2024. Odunze caught 54 passes for 734 yards and 3 touchdowns on 101 targets in 17 appearances during his rookie year.

Injuries limited his playtime in his sophomore year. Odunze caught 44 passes for 661 yards and 6 touchdowns on 90 targets in 12 starts.

Prior to facing the Patriots, he had 21 catches for 300+ yards and zero touchdowns on 33 targets in six appearances. Williams targeted Odunze five times on Thursday night. He caught four passes for 69 yards (17.3 YAC).

In the fourth quarter on third and nine, Williams snapped the ball and launched a dart at Odunze. The pass missed a Patriots defender before Odunze plucked it out of the air for a first down. That play got Odunze pumped.

Meanwhile, Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit raved about Williams’ arm strength and his vision to find his receiver through the chaos. Fans on social media agreed.

Caleb Williams leads the Bears to a fifth victory of the season

Chicago broke the deadlock with a field goal in the first quarter. Running back D’Andre Swift extended the lead with a 4-yard touchdown. Drake Maye reduced the gap in the second quarter with a rushing touchdown.

Cairo Santos scored his second FG, and then Williams threw a touchdown pass to Luther Burden III. However, a lapse in concentration allowed Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson to walk in a touchdown right before halftime.

Williams and Maye traded touchdown passes after the restart. Williams found tight end Colston Loveland for a 12-yard score. Maye hit his first-year TE Eli Raridon for a 30-yard TD.

Santos missed his third FG from 53 yards in the fourth quarter, but that didn’t deter Ben Johnson from letting him try from 58 yards. Santos scored to open a nine-point gap. Patriots kicker Andres Borregales reduced it to seven. Bears won 30-24.

Williams completed 22 of 33 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Williams maintained his 70%+ pass completion rate after four starts. Swift rushed 22 times for 78 yards and scored one touchdown. Burde caught 4 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown.

The Bears improve to 5-2 while the Patriots are 4-3. Chicago has the same number of wins as their NFC North rivals, the Minnesota Vikings. But the Vikings haven’t lost a game in five and are the NFC second seed behind the 6-0 San Francisco 49ers.
