As the Dallas Cowboys crumble before the football world’s eyes, head coach Brian Schottenheimer has to figure out how to turn this around before owners Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones decide they need to make changes.

Their start to the season could not have been more embarrassing against the upstart New York Giants. An impressive win over the Commanders next week could make the season-opening loss look like a freak accident.

But since then, they have won just one other game. That win came against the then-struggling Houston Texans. QB Dak Prescott‘s motivational words to Texans QB CJ Stroud have seemed to work, as they have won two straight games.

Prescott’s team, on the other hand, has lost the last two. If the loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, helmed by an undrafted rookie QB, was the lowlight of their season, then their next one against the Green Bay Packers exposed problems across the board.

In fact, that game against the Packers proved the blame isn’t just on the defense or special teams. As Jeff Saturday would go on to say on First, the lack of offense was telling.

Their defense has been atrocious. Their offense was supposed to be what they relied on. At every turn this season, they failed.

Jeff Saturday said

The Super Bowl champion reiterated that when a team’s identity is based on its explosive offense, there is no excuse when that unit does not do what is expected. Since most of that responsibility falls on Brian Schottenheimer, Saturday believes they need to stop blaming the defense and step up.

Stephen Jones defends Brian Schottenheimer over job security narratives

Jeff Saturday isn’t the only one questioning Brian Schottenheimer’s ability to run the Dallas Cowboys. Even those at 103.5 The FAN, the radio network that generally favors the franchise, have raised question marks.

Even though they ran into trouble with Jerry Jones in the past for criticizing him, they had no qualms about calling out the head coach for what was an atrocious offensive effort. A day earlier, when Stephen Jones was a guest on the station, they asked whether Schotty is the right person for the job.

Absolutely. There’s not any question in Jerry’s or my mind. He has the team… Feel really good about our coaching staff.

Stephen Jones replied

This was the first time an owner defended their head coach, dismissing any doubts about his job security. Jones reiterated that Brian Schottenheimer and his coaching staff are the right people to fix this situation. He expects the team to evolve and be better than what their current record reflects.

Brian Schottenheimer deflects question about job security

Sure enough, Stephen Jones, making it clear that Brian Schottenheimer’s job was safe, ramped up conversations about it. That explains why reporters at the Cowboys’ press conference at The Star asked him about it.

No, not really. I mean, I think at the end of the day, I’m focused on the process of turning this around for myself, the players. Certainly not good enough. We’re disappointed with where we’re at. We know we need to play better. We know we can play better… I think at the end of the day, we’ve got the right guys to do that.

Schottenheimer replied

He is trying to suggest he hasn’t thought about his job security. Instead, the 53-year-old is focused on getting his players ready to turn this around. He believes they can, and will, do whatever it takes to stop this run of bad performances. That is saying a lot from a coach who claimed his team was Super Bowl-ready.
