The Chicago Bears suffered a massive setback when starting quarterback Caleb Williams picked up an injury in the fourth quarter of their Week 2 rivalry game against the Minnesota Vikings. Williams did not return.

Rain poured during Sunday’s early kickoff at Soldier Field. The wet surface made it incredibly challenging for players to stay on their feet. Several slipped while catching a pass or during a scramble.

Williams fell prey to the latter. In the fourth quarter, the score stood at 6-3 with eight minutes played. Ben Johnson ran several run plays, and on 1st & Goal, Williams took off with the ball, aiming for the pylon on the near side.

He never made it. About eight yards before the end zone, Vikings linebacker Lukas Van Ness made a last-ditch effort to stop the 24-year-old. He did not even come close to Williams’ shoestring. However, the third-year signal caller slid down on the turf and came to a standstill.

Medics quickly ran onto the field to check on him. Cameras caught Williams wincing in pain and, moments later, they were seen escorting Williams to the blue tent on their shoulders. Tyson Bagent replaced Williams for his season debut.

Williams did not return. He was carted away to the nearby medical facility. Williams’ day ended with 15 completions on 26 attempts for 138 yards and 1 interception. He rushed 5 times for 42 yards.

Bagent, the former D2 star, threw 5 completions for 54 yards and took one sack. He was unable to deliver a victory. The Vikings hung on to secure a low-scoring 9-3 victory.

After the game, Vikings pass rusher Dallas Turner, who had 5 tackles and 2 sacks, told ESPN reporter Stacey Dales that he took a knee and prayed for Williams when he went down.

Bears head coach provided an update on Caleb Williams

Losing the anchor in a crucial moment of a crunch match really throws a team off their game. The Bears didn’t look like a team that scored 59 on the Panthers a week earlier. To simply put, Vikings DC Brian Flores blitzed hard several times in the rain, and the Bears couldn’t contain it.

That’s why Williams constantly had to move out of the pocket to throw the ball. Eventually, he pulled something while scampering over the wet turf.

Initially, a handful of doctors on Twitter suspected that Williams may have suffered an ACL injury. Head coach Ben Johnson clarified at the post-game presser.

You could kind of see in real time. I’m actually happy it’s nothing with the knee. You know, that was my first inclination. But yeah, the hamstring could be pretty damaging as well. So, we’ll see how bad it is tomorrow, and you know, we’ll go from there.

Ben Johnson said

Williams started the season with a bang. He dropped 361 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Panthers. He also set up D’Andre Swift for 3 touchdowns and Kyle Monangai for one.

Prayers up to him, we love Caleb and it sucks, but we had to go finish the Game. Tyson’s the next man up and he’s a heck of a player and knows how to Play Quarterback.

Bears tight end Colston Loveland said

Bagent has been with the Bears since 2023. The undrafted signal caller made a name for himself at the D2 level with Shepherd Rams. He set D2 records with 1400 completions, 17,034 yards, and 159 touchdowns. Bagent is 2-2 in his NFL career. Before the 2025 season, Bagent signed a two-year, $10 million contract extension. Now, he has to prove that he’s worthy of the extension in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles if Williams is declared unfit to start.
