Cam Ward is treading very close to becoming an NFL bust. Ward has to start winning games; otherwise, the Tennessee Titans will look for an alternative, despite Robert Saleh’s unwavering faith in his abilities.
The Titans are 0-4 after Sunday’s defeat to the Baltimore Ravens. With that result, Ward is now 3-18 in his first 21 NFL games.
According to NFL Rookie Watch on X, Ward now has the “same amount of career losses [18] as JaMarcus Russell.”
Cam Ward now has the SAME AMOUNT of career losses (18) as JaMarcus Russell. Ward has played and started in 21 career NFL games (3-18 career record). Russell played and started in 25 career NFL games (7-18 career record) 😳😬 https://t.co/1PJQearotq

JaMarcus Russell, a five-star recruit, played college football for the LSU Tigers. In his three seasons as the starter, Russell put up massive numbers. He completed 493 passes for 6625 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions in 36 games.
The 6-foot-6 Russell had the rare ability to throw for more than 60 yards—qualities NFL teams adore. The Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) drafted Russell 1st overall in 2007.
Russell made just four appearances in his rookie year as contract talks hit a wall. He played every game the following year and posted a 5-12 record. In year three, he went 2-7.
The top pick finished the 2009 season with the lowest quarterback rating, lowest completion percentage, fewest passing touchdowns, and fewest passing yards among qualifying quarterbacks in the NFL.
At the start of the 2010 campaign, Russell reportedly showed up at camp far above the designated weight for an NFL quarterback. After quickly falling out of favor with the club, both sides filed grievances against one another regarding unpaid salary.
Russell left the Raiders soon after. A few years later, his attempt to find a club failed as well. In a fiery article, NFL.com‘s Steve Wyche once claimed that JaMarcus Russell was the biggest draft bust in NFL history. Russell retired with a 7-18 record.
Ward is 3-18, which is technically worse than Russell. Furthermore, his frustration is starting to show up in his actions. After Sunday’s game, he was filmed directing his anger at the media for being late for the presser.
There’s still hope for Cam Ward
Russell wasn’t the only quarterback who struggled to win games. A large percentage of quarterbacks taken first overall face the same issue because most of the time the team he’s drafted to is in a rebuild.
One name who experienced similar circumstances is Troy Aikman. The UCLA legend was drafted first overall by the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Aikman did not win a single game in eleven starts in his rookie year and went 7-8 the following year. Then, he posted a winning campaign in year three.

Over the next five seasons, Aikman won double digit games and helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowls. Aikman finished his career with a 94-71 regular-season record and an 11-4 postseason record. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
After 21 career starts in the NFL Cam Ward: 3,895 YDS 18 TDs 9 INTs Troy Aikman: 3,462 YDS 14 TDs 32 INTs Is there still hope for Cam in Tennessee? https://t.co/rRv4WEM06I

At the moment, Ward still has a long way to go before entering the HOF talks. For now, he must string together a few wins to gain some confidence.
Ward began his college career at the FCS level at Incarnate Word. In 2022, he transferred to Washington State. He caught the Miami Hurricanes and transferred to the ACC program in 2024.
Ward posted a 10-3 record. Ward completed 67.2% of his passes for 4313 yards (a school record), 39 touchdowns (leading the FBS), and 7 interceptions.
In 2025, the Titans selected Ward over Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders. Sanders went to Cleveland, where he’s currently a backup.
