On Monday, Kylian Mbappe lashed out at Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla. Following her racist attacks on the French captain, the footballer called her a “despicable woman” in a scathing message on social media. She has now threatened to take legal action against him.

A couple of days ago, on Saturday, France took on Paraguay in the Round of 16 tie in Philadelphia. The South Americans came into this game on the back of a historic victory over Germany via a penalty shootout in the Round of 32.

Mbappe was on the scoresheet once again. The Real Madrid striker scored his 7th goal of this World Cup through a penalty in the 70th minute. This lone strike from him was enough for his team as they beat Paraguay 1-0.

After the game, he found himself under attack from Amarilla. The senator fired at him and made several derogatory remarks. She even claimed that one thing the Paraguay team did not do was to slap him.

The brute didn’t even learn to write; instead of mother’s milk, he s***** on coconuts, and the most educated thing he heard was chimpanzees.

In another tweet, which she later deleted, she made more racial slurs and called him arrogant and ugly.

A colonised Cameroonian, desperately trying to pass himself off as French, resentful, arrogant and ugly.

Mbappe hit back at her on Monday. In a long message on X, the 27-year-old claimed that she was unworthy of having her position.

Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. … Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.

The post from Mbappe received huge support from the fans. In over 12 hours, the post received over 1 million likes, as several users stood in solidarity with the athlete.

Following the backlash, Amarilla released an open letter. In this, she claimed that her words came out while she was boiling over. However, she then went on to attack the striker for his words against her and threatened legal action if he did not retract his statement and apologize to her.

I regretted having mistreated you with the same insults I receive, because I too am despised for being dark-skinned and Latina. I regretted it and deleted the post. Now I demand that you also retract your statement to me and apologize. I will not tolerate your violence either. … Otherwise I may initiate legal action for gender violence.
