BJ Thompson has been released by the doctors. The Kansas City Chiefs defensive end was admitted to the University of Kansas Hospital after he suffered cardiac arrest.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero confirmed the news on social media that the 25-year-old who collapsed on Thursday during the Chiefs training has been discharged. Thompson suffered a cardiac arrest and quick thinking from kicker Harrison Butker saved his life.

Butker ran to get the medical team along with the staff who were present in the facility. Chief Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance Rick Burkholder revealed that Thompson’s heart had stopped beating.

Without wasting much time, they administered a defibrillator to stabilize him. Afterward, they transferred Thompson to the hospital, where he stayed for four days under constant surveillance.

Thompson’s agent, Chris Turnage, reported that his client was awake and talking with the doctors. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed per Bleacher Report that doctors could release Thomson as early as June 10.

He [BJ Thompson] could be released from the hospital as early as Monday or Tuesday, so that’s great news for Thompson and the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Thompson in the fifth round in 2023. He only appeared in two games, lodging a couple of tackles. 2024 was regarded as the breakout year for the ex-Baylor man.

The recent events may force the Chiefs to rethink their strategy about using Thompson. Regardless, his agent thanked everyone who had prayed for the betterment of his client’s health.

The family thanks everyone for their prayers and wants to especially thank the Chiefs medical and training staff for their rapid response and professionalism [throughout] this situation.
BJ Turnage said per Pelissero

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid showed solidarity for Thompson. The veteran four-time Super Bowl-winning coach has been around for a while and has seen a lot during his time.

[It’s a] tough situation. We’ve been through a couple of those before in my time and it’s never, ever fun. Thank goodness.

The Chiefs are scheduled to start their mandatory mini-camp on Tuesday, which will run until Thursday. There’s no confirmation whether Thompson will take any part in the training.
