With all the new contracts being signed, other players have leapfrogged Patrick Mahomes‘ average annual salary. Even though he still holds the highest cumulative total and value, a player of his caliber lagging behind others was going to come to everyone’s notice.

After all, he is the only player in the past decade to hold three Super Bowl wins and three Super Bowl MVPs. Sure, Aaron Rodgers has more regular-season MVPs than him, and Lamar Jackson also has two of them. But in sheer success terms, there is no doubt that the Texas Tech alum has positioned himself as the best player in the league by a considerable margin.

More importantly, the Chiefs are aware of what Mahomes can do for them over the years. Given the right system and players, he can get them to more Super Bowls.

There are concerns over how he will come back from his devastating ACL and MCL tears. Then there were also question marks about his ability outside the pocket which once was his trademark.

Despite all that, the franchise believes they have someone who could challenge the great Tom Brady in the GOAT race, and to ensure that he remains, they have restructured his contract.

The Chiefs are adding two years to Patrick Mahomes’ contract, tying him to Kansas City through the 2033 season at a value of $504.75 million.

Not only have they added some significant heft to his deal, but to secure him until Mahomes will be 38 is a move that will allow the Chiefs to concentrate on building a team around him.

Fans lose their minds over the first half-billion-dollar contract in NFL history

Patrick Mahomes has now rightly overtaken Dak Prescott, the previous highest salary-earning NFL player, after the restructure brings his yearly average up to $64 million.

What stunned fans was the total value of the contract, which is more than half a billion. They are aware that NBA and MLB players earn more and will do so over the course of their careers.

But for an NFL player to earn a half-billion-dollar contract was new. They took to social media to express their surprise, examples of which are below.

With the pace at which NFL salaries are growing, someone else will probably surpass Patrick Mahomes’ annual average. But it is unlikely that his half-billion-dollar contract will be overtaken anytime soon.

Patrick Mahomes’ half-billion-dollar contract could put pressure on the rest of the league

When Patrick Mahomes first signed his 10-year, $450 million contract back in 2020, many felt that he completely deserved it. His talent with the ball in his hands and his growth trajectory made it sensible for the Chiefs to lock him up for that long.

Now, some are still not convinced this new eight-year, $504.75 million contract makes sense, especially since the 30-year-old has not proved he is as good as he was before his injuries.

However, the Chiefs have made it clear they believe in him, and that is what matters. What this new, renegotiated deal does is pile the pressure on other franchises.

So far, they all were constructing their rosters to win and dethrone the Chiefs. A couple of teams can claim to have done that, but the rest are nowhere close to deposing them.

This will push those teams to take greater risks while building rosters. Not only will they have to shell out more to entice the best free agents, but they will also have to hand out more cash to their top players, even if they have not achieved anything close to what Mahomes has.

All of this could end up working out well for the Chiefs. They now have stability at the most important position, and can focus on building from that.
