Christian Gonzalez has had a roller coaster of a few weeks. On one hand, the New England Patriots activated the fifth-year option in Gonzalez’s rookie contract; on the other, the CB has to deal with the fiasco generated by club head coach Mike Vrabel‘s inappropriate relationship with NFL insider Dianna Russini.
Gonzalez participated in Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith’s celebrity softball game on Saturday, May 2, at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. After the game, Gonzalez faced the reporters and made his stance clear about coach Vrabel.
We ain’t gon’ [going to] speak on what we talked about inside the building [the Patriots facility]. But I mean, that’s my coach [Mike Vrabel]. That’s who I go out there and play for. He’s proven to what he can do as a coach. That’s my guy, and I ride behind Vrabes any time of the day.

On April 9, the New York Post published photos as evidence of Mike Vrabel’s and Dianna Russini’s extramarital affair. Both Vrabel and Russini downplayed the photos and received support from their respective parent organizations.
As more time passed, Russini’s company, The Athletic, the sports wing of The New York Times, sidelined Russini and launched an investigation against her. Russini shocked the football world by resigning from her post before the investigation ended.

Later, it was reported that several people across the league were aware of Vrabel and Russini’s illicit affair. It’s inappropriate because both are married to different individuals. Vrabel has been married for more than 20 years, and Russini took her vows in 2020.
A day before the draft, Vrabel took responsibility for his actions by seeking professional help. Quarterback Drake Maye stood by his coach for helping the team go on a Super Bowl run in 2025.
We’re here for Coach [Vrabel]. We love Coach. What he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year, you can’t speak into words. Thankful he’s our head coach. And I know he’s dealing with some stuff of the field, and out of the coaching world, but we’re here for him, and I know he’s gonna come back.

The Patriots pick up Christian Gonzalez’s fifth-year option
The Patriots drafted Gonzalez 17th overall in 2023. After just four appearances, he suffered a torn labrum and missed the remainder of the campaign. In the following two years, Gonzalez recorded 128 combined tackles, defended 21 passes, and had 2 interceptions. In the Super Bowl against the Seahawks, the Oregon alum allowed just one pass on 5 targets, and 3 PBUs (40.4 rating allowed in coverage).

Before the photos went viral, Vrabel hinted that the Patriots had discussed activating Gonzalez’s fifth-year option.
Yes. If we haven’t picked it up, we should pick it up.
