This week’s SmackDown was the first episode to kick-start the reign of Cody Rhodes as champion. He showed up to express his love and admiration for the fans and the championship. However, what no one expected was the American Nightmare dropping an NSFW bomb to kick off the show. He reminisced about the words of his beloved wife, Brandi Rhodes, referencing their time together in AEW.

In the opening segment of SmackDown, Cody Rhodes was talking about the next challenger for his title. He then went on to use the iconic line of Brandi Rhodes, which she used in AEW. This moment generated a lot of hype, as it was a subtle callback to the Rhodes’ couple’s infamous segment. It was quite a different attitude from The American Nightmare than he usually portrays, as he implicitly meant that it was his era and he was pulling the shots around.

For context, Cody’s wife, Brandi, used the same line during her time in AEW. She bashed Jade Cargill with the same phrase, which made her a fan favorite ever since. Moreover, the Undisputed Champion also revealed the set of matches that would determine his next challenger for the championship at Backlash in France.

Cody Rhodes set to face either LA Knight or AJ Styles at Backlash in France

This week’s show kicked off a new era of SmackDown. The main highlight of the show was to determine the next challenger for Cody Rhodes. Therefore, WWE planned two triple-threat matches where the winners of those matches would go on to face each other next week on SmackDown. The winner of that match will face The American Nightmare at Backlash in France next month.

LA Knight and AJ Styles came out victorious in their respective triple-threat matches. Now they will go one-on-one next week. Besides, both of them have a rich history with Rhodes and the championship as well. In essence, these new challengers give a fresh feel to the Undisputed Title picture on SmackDown.

Backlash in France is going to be an incredible event. It is a high possibility that The Phenomenal One might pick up the win and challenge Rhodes next month. All eyes are on the golden boy of WWE, as he has been the top face of the company. Therefore, several dream matches for him are on the horizon in the forecoming weeks.
