ICC Test Rankings: India remain on top; New Zealand behind by just one rating point
Captains Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli
The ICC Test Rankings for teams were released today and the Indian side retained their top spot. However, New Zealand follow close behind as they are short of India’s tally by just one rating point. The Black Caps have a two-match series against England next month and if they emerge victorious, they could get past India in the rankings. But, it remains unclear as to whether the ICC would name revised rankings ahead of the final.
This could mean that the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) might or might not see New Zealand beginning the match as the No. 1 ranked Test side. The all-important final is one of the most anticipated matches in recent times as it sees the culmination of a two-year long tournament that ended with the top two ranked sides reaching the summit clash.
The New Zealanders are currently in Maldives where they are quarantining and are set to leave for England by the end of this week. The Indian side on the other hand, will leave a bit late due to the fact that their next match will directly be the final of the championship unlike for New Zealand who have a series against England.
India retain top spot in ICC Test Rankings; England gain one position
The annual update of the Test Team Rankings were done today by the ICC and it didn’t see a lot of changes as there were only two sides that made gains. The first was England who jumped from fourth to third, leaving behind Australia who suffered the demoralizing series loss against India earlier this year.
West Indies who faced success in Bangladesh jumped up two spots to 6th while the fading South Africa and Sri Lanka find themselves on 7th and 8th respectively. Pakistan have stayed fifth although they have gained three points. The likes of Bangladesh and Zimbabwe remain 9th and 10th with plenty of ground to catch up on the top 8 sides.
