IND vs SL: “I will want Prithvi Shaw to play all the six matches,” says VVS Laxman
Prithvi Shaw and VVS Laxman
Former India cricketer VVS Laxman has stated that he would love to see Prithvi Shaw in all six matches of the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.
Team India is scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is from July 13 onwards in the island nation. Prithvi Shaw has been picked in the squad along with several other opening batsmen such as skipper Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal.
During a pre-series show on Star Sports, the former cricketer said that he’ll prefer Shaw over anybody else in both ODIs and T20Is.
“I will want Prithvi Shaw to play all the six matches, not only the ODIs but T20Is as well. No one has any doubt about his ability,” VVS Laxman said while speaking on Star Sports.
The cricketer-turned-commentator highlighted that the India vs Sri Lanka 2021 series comes with an opportunity for Shaw to make a comeback in all three formats of the game.
“This will definitely be an opportunity for him because he has to make a comeback in all formats, not only in white-ball cricket but in Test matches as well,” he added.
“We saw the hunger in Shaw in the Vijay Hazare Trophy”
VVS Laxman talked about the 21-year-old’s stellar performance while captaining Mumbai in the recent edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The flamboyant opener smashed a record-breaking 827 runs in just eight innings at an unbelievable average of over 165. This also helped Mumbai clinch yet another VHT title after beating Uttar Pradesh in the final match.
“More than the IPL, I was impressed with his performance as a captain in the Vijay Hazare tournament because he was dropped from the Indian team and there was a lot of discussion about his technique.
“We saw the hunger in him in the Vijay Hazare tournament, match after match not only centuries but match-winning knocks, highest run-getter in the tournament as a captain. Secondly, we also saw the change in his technique in the IPL. This is what you want to see from a young batsman,” the 46-year-old former batsman stated.
