“Injured Hitman is more dangerous”- Twitter goes frenzied as Bangladesh survive a Rohit Sharma scare to secure ODI series
Bangladesh beat India by 5 runs to win the series by 2-0.
Despite injuring his thumb, India skipper Rohit Sharma played one of the best matches this year with his cameo to take India to 266/9. India missed a six off the last ball, and Bangladesh won the match by five runs, securing the three-match ODI series by 2-0 on Wednesday (December 7) at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Dhaka.
During India’s chase of 272-run target, Ebadot Hossain drew the first blood by dismissing Virat Kohli in the second over (who opened the innings in the absence of Rohit as the skipper injured his thumb while attempting a catch but came back later). Kohli could produce just five runs from six balls.
Mustafizur Rahman then dismissed the other opener, Shikhar Dhawan, in the third over. All-rounder Washington Sundar’s inning was short-lived when Shakib Al Hasan sent him to the dugout in the 10th over. Sundar had scalped three wickets, but with the bat, he could score just 11 runs from 19 balls.
India vice-captain KL Rahul played 28 balls and scored 14 runs when Mehidy Hasan dismissed him off LBW in the 19th over. India were reeling at 65/4 when Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer stitched a much-needed stand with both completing their respective half-centuries.
Iyer played 102 balls to score 82 runs with six fours and three sixes before Mehidy dismissed him in the 35th over. Mehidy bowled a flighted one which Iyer charged down the wicket toward the mid-wicket. He couldn’t connect the ball and only got height and the ball fell into Afif Hossain’s hands.
Axar Patel lost his wicket in the 39th over when Ebadot Hossain delivered a short ball around the stump. Patel came down the track to push the ball around the cover region, but Shakib grabbed the catch to end his innings. After losing the set batters, India lost two batters in the 43rd and 46th overs, respectively.
It looked like an easy win for Bangladesh until the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s onslaught revived India’s hope of tieing the series. Despite injuring his thumb during Bangladeshi’s innings, it was one of Rohit’s best knocks. His quick 51* off 28 balls (with three fours and five maximums) dragged India to 266/9, and India needed just six from the last ball.
But Mustafizur, who bowled the last over, had the last laugh as no runs were scored off the last ball of India’s innings. Bangladesh secured the three-match ODI series by 2-0. This is the second time that Bangladesh defeated India in the ODI series since 2004; the first was in 2015.
