Virat Kohli was part of the three-match ODI series against Australia. In the decider ODI on Thursday (March 23), Kohli, who had slammed his 65th ODI half-century while chasing a 270-run target, played a loose shot off Ashton Agar’s delivery. He exited the field after scoring 54 runs from 72 balls, including two fours and a six.

Former India batter-turned-commentator Mohammad Kaif showed his disappointment over Kohli’s shot selection and said that it lacked planning

“It was a chip shot. There was no planning. The ball had gone one bounce to Warner in the previous over. He just survived there. If you want to hit a six, you have to commit. When Virat Kohli decides something, he does it with certainty.

“You cannot play a half-hearted shot. When the ball becomes soft, the ball doesn’t travel. You will not be able to hit the ball into gaps, you will have to put power there,” Kaif told Star Sports.

Speaking of the match, Aussie spinner Adam Zampa wreaked havoc with his four-wicket haul. Australia batted first and put on 269 on the scoreboard.

Despite Kohli’s half-century, India ended up losing the match by 21 runs. Zampa scalped wickets at regular intervals owing to which India fumbled to stitch partnerships. With the win in the third ODI, Australia clinched the series 2-1. This series defeat is also India’s first one after four years. It was the Aussie team again who defeated the hosts back in 2019 in ODIs.
