Recent reports claim that the hosting rights of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup have been taken from the USA. The USA was going to host the tournament along with West Indies in 2024.

The USA is the first country to be given the status of an associate member a decade ago. And in April 2022, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the USA and West Indies will co-host the T20 extravaganza and that both teams will directly qualify for the World Cup.

The qualification pathway for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2023 was confirmed with 12 teams qualifying automatically for the event. The top eight teams from 2022 even will be joined by the two host Members, West Indies and USA plus the next highest-ranked teams on the MRF ICC Men’s T20 rankings table as of 14 November 2022,” the ICC release had stated back then.

ICC sources don’t understand the apex body’s “love” for America

However, a report by News18, ICC has confirmed that West Indies will be the only nation to host the World Cup. The reason behind this, as per the report, is that the USA doesn’t have an elected cricketing body plus they don’t have a good first-class culture. The Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida is the only ICC ODI-accredited venue in the US to date. It has successfully hosted a few international matches.

“What I can’t understand is, why is the ICC so bent on “developing” a sport in a country that is the leading first-world nation on the planet and can afford to fend for itself? On top of that, the US neither has an elected body in place nor does it have a decent First Class culture.

So what’s the hurry to take the World Cup there? Why can’t the ICC put that much emphasis on developing cricket in Nepal or any of the African nations that truly follow and play the sport? One must ask the ICC to explain their “love” for America,” a baffled ICC source was quoted as saying by News18.

The ICC continues to run its affairs in the US because of its not have an elected body. News18 has mailed ICC to give clarifications on the same, which is yet to arrive. But during that conversation, the ICC sources did confirm that West Indies are now the “only” hosts for the 2024 World Cup.
