Irfan Pathan believes Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) might go after opener Mayank Agarwal at the mini-auction for IPL 2023. He stated that the franchise needs an experienced opener after they released Kane Williamson from their roaster. He feels that the Indian opener will be a perfect fit for the role.
“SRH will go after Mayank Agarwal because they need a kind of aggressive opener as well. They don’t have Kane Williamson right now who led them for many years as an experienced player and who used to open the innings as well,” the former Indian cricketer said on the Star Sports show Game Plan.
Apart from his batting ability, Mayank can captain the side as he is experienced in leading an IPL side. “Mayank Agarwal is the kind of guy who has led a side, who plays quite freely as well, very fearless, very selfless. They might be thinking of him going forward as a leader as well,” Irfan Pathan added.
Will SRH bounce back?
Mayank Agarwal is a veteran batter who has proven himself in the IPL as well as the international arena. He has 2327 runs in 113 matches, averaging 22.59 at a strike rate of 134.28, including 12 fifties and a century. He is a clean striker of the ball, who can maximize the powerplay overs with his aggressive approach.
SRH had a forgettable season last year where they finished in eighth position with 12 points in 14 games. They released a large portion of their squad ahead of the auction, indicating their aim of reconstructing their squad. They have INR 42.25 crore remaining in their purse with which they can sign star players.
