Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for India on Day 1 of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Nagpur. But the Australian media accused him of using an external substance on his fingers.

In the videos that surfaced online, Jadeja could be seen taking a substance from Mohammed Siraj and applying it on his spinning finger. This triggered the debate on social media regarding ball-tampering. Former Australia captain Tim Paine called the video “interesting” while former England captain Michael Vaughan also questioned what Jadeja was applying.

The Indian team management did not like it because it involved the integrity of a senior player Jadeja who has been with the team for a long time. However, as per recent reports, the match referee, Andy Pycroft, has given a clean chit to Jadeja and India.

The left-arm spinner has been away from cricket for almost five months so he is not used to long bowling spells. That is why he used a pain-relief ointment on his sore bowling fingers and no charges have been laid against him. Under the Laws of Cricket, the bowler needs the umpire’s permission to apply any sort of substance on their hands to ensure that the ball’s condition remains unaffected.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri shut all the talks surrounding Ravindra Jadeja’s incident. Australian media outlet FOX Cricket made a report on Jadeja and shared the same on Twitter.

I have not heard much about it. I have asked two questions. Was there any problem with the Australian team? The answer was ‘no’. Did the match referee come into play? He had told about it, he cleared everything, the matter ends,” Shastri said at the start of Day 2 on Star Sports. Star Sports highlighted Vaughan’s tweet.

Why are we discussing anybody else? And to be honest, ointment as a reliever, the match referee would have been told if there was any decision to be taken or action, he would have been taken it. By the way, on this track, you don’t need anything, the ball will turn,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jadeja played his first game after recovering from injury and his fifer skittled out the visitors for a paltry 177 runs. On Day 2, India batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are at the crease playing at 85* and 10* respectively. India have so far scored 149/3 and are trailing behind 28 runs.
