On 28th November, Ruturaj Gaikwad scored his maiden T20i century against Australia in the 3rd T20i. His 123* ensured India had a massive total of 222 runs with the loss of 3 wickets and have one foot on the series win. 

Coming in to open the innings, Gaikwad played conservatively as India lost two wickets early. After the 12th over, he began expressing himself and playing his shots, as he scored 90 runs in the final 8 overs. From scoring his half century in 32 balls, the opener from Pune scored the remaining 73 in 25 balls. Australia’s last over was bowled by Glenn Maxwell, who was hit for 30 runs, with Gaikwad hitting 27. 

Being sent in to bat first, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan early in the powerplay, with both scoring 6 and 0. Suryakumar Yadav and Gaikwad built a partnership of 50 runs before the captain was dismissed for 39. Tilak Varma and Gaikwad built a 141* run partnership, with the opener contributing 101 runs.

Ruturaj Gaikwad garnered loads of praise for his fabulous century as he put India on the driver’s seat of the match. Many netizens praised his shots, temperament and his ability to accelerate. Some criticized the BCCI for making a flat pitch that could help the Australians as well, while one said he scored in a useless match.

Australia began their innings with a bang, with Travis Head scoring 35 runs before being dismissed on his 18th ball by Aavesh Khan. Aaron Hardie lasted for only 12 balls before being dismissed for 16 by Arshdeep Singh. Josh Inglis was then bowled by Ravi Bishnoi for 10 runs. Now with Australia still chasing a huge target, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell in the middle attempting to get Australia’s first win in the series.
