Days after India’s loss to Australia in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup Finals, ODI Captain Rohit Sharma’s future is in question. Although the 36-year-old has been captain for over 2 years, his future will now be a topic of discussion for the Selection Committee and BCCI.

In a report by Times of India, Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma will have a meeting regarding the future of the Indian team. Sharma has not featured in a T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals, which India lost to eventual champions England, so it is safe to say his T20I career is finished. It has also been reported that he has informed the selectors that he will not feature in any more T20Is.

The Indian captain will be 40 years old during the next World Cup, so the Selection Committee will be searching for a younger replacement. He might feature in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan.

Sharma’s aim is now to focus on the 2025 WTC, which India failed to win in 2021 and 2023. He will also be working to groom a successor, with Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul being touted as the favorites for the role.

Australian legends criticize Rohit Sharma for the underutilisation of Mohammed Siraj

Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting were unhappy with the way Rohit Sharma used Mohammed Siraj in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Mohammed Shami, who has had one of the best World Cup campaigns by an Indian bowler, bowled with a new ball instead of Siraj. Siraj had been India’s opening bowler during Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. In 2023, Siraj picked up 44 wickets with an average of 20.68.

Watson was stunned Siraj didn’t bowl with the new ball and said Sharma made a mistake. Watson also added that Shami didn’t have control with the new ball. Ricky Ponting, who was in the commentary box, said Rohit made a huge mistake by not bowling Siraj early, who was a new ball specialist.
