‘I don’t know who is seeing him as captain’ – Salman Butt not in favour of changing India’s T20I captaincy

‘I don’t know who is seeing him as captain’ – Salman Butt not in favour of changing India’s T20I captaincy

Former Pakistani cricketer Salman Butt is not keen to see a change in India’s T20I captaincy. He believes Rohit Sharma should continue to lead the side despite the Men in Blue’s poor exit from the T20 World Cup 2022. He also stated that if Rohit had got runs with the bat, no one would have been talking about it.

“I don’t know who is seeing him as captain and who is watching such dreams. He has talent and has tasted success in the IPL. But even Rohit Sharma has been successful five to six times in the IPL. If he had scored well in a couple of matches (in the T20 World Cup 2022), people wouldn’t have been talking about making this change at the top,” said Butt on his YouTube channel.

“In the Asian subcontinent, people start talking about such drastic and big changes rather soon. Not all of them, but quite a few, who probably don’t understand how these things work. Sometimes, just for the sake of giving an opinion, people say, ‘change the captain’,” he added.

Salman Butt also pointed out that not only Rohit Sharma but 10 other captains also failed to win the title, so will they also face punishment. “Only one captain has won the World Cup, the rest of the teams have lost. Will you change the captains of all 11 teams because they lost the World Cup?”, said Butt.

The BCCI took their first major step following a disappointing campaign as they sacked the entire senior men’s selectors panel on Friday (November 18). They also released a statement inviting applications for the positions with certain criteria mentioned. The appointment of the new selectors is expected to be completed by early January.

Reports have also surfaced that the governing body will have split captains for different formats. For the T20Is, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to be named skipper. Pandya is currently in New Zealand and leading the Indian side in the ongoing three-match T20I series.
