India captain Rohit Sharma missed the first ODI match against Australia because he had to attend the wedding of his brother-in-law. His absence saw Hardik Pandya leading the team at the Wankhede in Mumbai. But the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said at the time of the World Cup, a captain must be with the team and not miss it due to family commitments except for emergency cases.

When it comes to the World Cup, you can’t have a family commitment; it’s as simple as that. Maybe before that, finish everything that you have unless it’s an emergency. Emergency is something completely different,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Under Rohit, India lifted the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by beating Australia 2-1. But stand-in skipper Steve Smith and his men bounced back strongly to emerge victorious in the ODI series. After winning the first ODI by five wickets, Mitchell Starc‘s fifer helped his team win the second one by 10 wickets, before snatching the third ODI by 21 runs.

IND vs AUS

India tasted an ODI series defeat after four years. In 2019, Australia had outclassed the hosts in the 50-over format and since then, India played with eight teams on home soil and defeated them all. But Australia repeated the same what they did four years ago, by snatching the series 2-1 from the hosts.

With just eight months to go before the World Cup, this defeat wasn’t taken lightly by the Indian cricket fraternity. Sunil Gavaskar issued a warning to Rohit Sharma and co. to not forget this loss due to the Indian Premier League (IPL) because India can face Australia in the World Cup again.

Gavaskar first praised Australia’s tight fielding which created pressure as the Indian batters weren’t able to send the ball to the boundary and were finding it hard to get the singles. The 1983 World Cup winner added that if that happens, a player often ends up doing something they are not used to and suggested the team look at these kinds of stuff, and not forget this defeat due to the IPL.

But of course, now IPL starts. This shouldn’t be forgotten. India sometimes makes the mistake of forgetting this, but this one shouldn’t be because, in the World Cup, we may face Australia again,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
