“ASH THE LEGEND!”- Twitter erupts as Australia’s wickets fall like House of Cards courtesy Ashwin’s masterclass

Australia, the No.1 Test team, failed to impress. They are known for their fight-back attitude, a glimpse of which was absent today, making it a one-sided match. But Ashwin's scalping wickets one after the other was a treat to the eyes.

“ASH THE LEGEND!”- Twitter erupts as Australia’s wickets fall like House of Cards courtesy Ashwin’s masterclass

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin boasts of an outstanding record in Tests in India and his figures against Australia are excellent too. And that is why, all Aussie batsmen talked about before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, was how to face Ashwin.

But it was another spinner, Ravindra Jadeja, who made a return to Team India after five months and outclassed the opponent with his five-wicket haul with Ashwin picking three wickets in the first innings.

But in the second innings, India, after taking a 223-run lead, restricted the visitors to a mere 91 runs. Wickets fell like a pack of cards. The reason was Ashwin, who just didn’t let the batsmen stitch stands.

In the blink of an eye, he completed his five-wicket haul. It was Ashwin’s 31st five-wicket haul in just 89 Test matches. Then later, Jadeja and Mohammed Shami picked up two, while Axar Patel scalped one to bundle out Australia to win the match by an innings and 132 runs.

Australia, the No.1 Test team, failed to impress. They are known for their fight-back attitude, a glimpse of which was absent today, making it a one-sided match but Ashwin’s scalping wickets one after the other was a treat to the eyes.

After their paltry 177-run total in the first innings, it was expected of them to surprise India with their counter-attack but no batter, in both the first and second innings could reach even the 50-run mark. Only their debutant spinner, the 22-year-old Todd Murphy was brilliant with his seven-wicket haul.

Australian media, not the players though, called the Nagpur track a “doctored” pitch. But Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Axar Patel showed how to bat on a turning track like this. Rohit completed his century, while the other three slammed their respective half-centuries to steer India to 400 in their first innings.

In the second innings, the highest run-scorer from the Aussie side was Steve Smith who remained unbeaten on just 25 runs. Smith has good records in India but not his other teammates.

Ashwin triggered the collapse by sending opener Usman Khawaja back. Then No.1 Test batter Marnus Labuschagne, for the second time in this match, became Jadeja’s victim. Ashwin dismissed David Warner for the 11th time. His other victims were Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb, and Alex Carey.

The 91/10 is the second-lowest total Australia scored against India. All the focus will be on the Delhi Test now, which is scheduled to start on February 17.
