One women’s performance will be remembered in the years to come. She is Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Issy Wong, who turned the table to snatch all the hopes UP Warriorz (UPW) had of reaching the final of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL). The playoff was played on Friday (March 24) at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

But before going to what Wong did, here is what happened when UP Warriorz walked onto the field to chase a mammoth target of 183 runs (it was Nat Sciver-Brunt’s masterclass in the first innings which drove Mumbai to 182/4). UP skipper and opener Alyssa Healy had a terrible time with the bat. All she could add was 11 runs. Issy Wong was the reason.

Shweta Sehrawat (one off eight balls) was no help at all. Saika Ishaque’s over ended up being a wicket maiden when she sent Sehrawat into packing. Tahlia McGrath, the No.1 T20I bowler in international cricket, who had always rescued UP from horrible situations to take them to victory, had to give away her wicket due to Amanjot Kaur’s run out.

If she stayed at the crease, one could have watched another scintillating knock under pressure from McGrath and could have witnessed another nail-biting match but as that did not happen, Mumbai won the match by a huge margin of 72 runs after skittling out Alyssa Healy and co. for 110 in 17.4 overs.

Despite losing three wickets for a mere 21 runs, Kiran Navgire displayed a nerve of steel and stayed glued to the crease for a long time. She was in the process of stitching a stand with Grace Harris, but the latter became Nat Sciver’s victim in the eighth over.

Navgire was all guns blazing. She kept going for big astounding shots but not when Mumbai skipper Harmanpreet Kaur handed the ball to Issy Wong again, and she struck on the second ball of the 13th over. The fast bowler delivered it shot and again Navgire attempted to dance down the track for another huge hit, but Nat Sciver at the boundary did no mistake when the ball traveled straight to her.

After Navgire’s wicket, UP’s score read 84/5. Two balls later, it was 84/7. Wong will be remembered as the first bowler to register a hat-trick in WPL history. She first showed Simran Shaikh the way back to the pavilion and soon Sophie Ecclestone followed her; both of them departed for golden ducks.

Then one by one, the left batters were taken care of and Mumbai Indians finally secured the final berth of WPL. Wong finished the match with the figures of 15/4 in her full quota of four overs at an economy of just 3.75. And now, Harmanpreet Kaur and co. will square off against Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals in the 2023 WPL final on Sunday, March 26.
