Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off a sensational victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) to end their winless streak in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). After losing two back-to-back matches, the Rohit Sharma-led team, through huff and puff, did not let their brilliant start to the run chase go in vain, and eventually won the match by six wickets. They chased down the 173-run target on Tuesday (April 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

During the chase, Rohit Sharma slammed his first half-century since IPL 2021. He took 29 balls to reach the mark and was on the cusp of giving Mumbai a much-needed victory when Mustafizur Rahman trapped him in the 17th over. Rohit departed after a well-made 65 runs from 45 balls with six boundaries and four maximums.

Ishan Kishan also added 31 runs from 26 balls and stitched a 71-run stand with Rohit. He became a victim of Mukesh Kumar’s runout. It was Mukesh who turned the table in the 16th over. He dismissed Tilak Varma who scored 41 runs from 29 balls on the fifth ball, and on the next, he sent Suryakumar Yadav into packing as well. Suryakumar departed for a golden duck.

Now the responsibility landed on the shoulders of Tim David and Cameron Green. Though Mumbai had batters left, they were falling short of deliveries. In the final over, Anrich Nortje was given the task to defend four runs. He bowled brilliantly but couldn’t defend them.

On the last ball, two runs were needed and everyone must be thinking of a Super Over. But Nortje’s yorker made Cameron Green smash it toward long-on and he set off for the runs. But Nortje failed to grab the ball when fielder Lalit Yadav collected it and threw it at the bowler’s end. Nortje hit the stumps without the ball and the two batters completed the two runs needed to win the match by six wickets. Green and David remained unbeaten at 17* off eight and 13* off 11, respectively.
