Aaron Finch, one of T20 cricket’s most destructive batters called it quits on his international career. He announced the decision that he’ll no longer play T20Is, having said bye to ODIs in September last year. It was expected of him to take this decision. Finch wanted to play the Big Bash League (BBL) to consider his future career in T20Is. He had a successful stint with the bat for his team Melbourne Renegades, scoring 428 runs at 38.90. Eventually, he decided to take a call on his career for Australia and informed the board.

Realizing that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment (to) step down and give the team to plan and build towards that event,” Finch said. He will continue to play with the Renegades and other domestic T20 matches.

Australia need not hurry to find a new skipper for the shortest format because all the focus is on the major Test matches, against India, Ashes, and World Test Championships. Their next T20I assignment will be a tour to South Africa in late August.

Pat Cummins, the Test and ODI skipper, is unlikely to be an all-format captain. Then there are players like Matthew Wade, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, and Perth Scorchers’ Ashton Turner are possible candidates to take up the position, though there is no clear picture now.

Finch, 36, is the first skipper to lead his team to their first-ever T20 World Cup crown in 2021. They had a poor run as hosts in 2022 when they failed to reach even the semi-finals.

Apart from that T20 World Cup crown, Finch was also part of the team when it lifted the 2015 ODI World Cup. “Team success is what you play the game for and the maiden T20 World Cup win in 2021 and lifting the ODI World Cup on home soil in 2015 will be the two memories I cherish the most.”

Finch, in his 12-year-long career, leaves as Australia’s leading run-scorer in the shortest format, scoring 3120 at 34.28 and a strike rate of 142.53. He is also the highest run-scorer in the history of the format, as he slammed 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018.

Finch has always entertained the fans with his hard-hitting. And as it always happens, whenever a player of Finch’s caliber retires from the game, social media explodes with comments, pictures, and videos to send warm wishes to the players. Fans are also remembering the knocks he played in the Indian Premier League matches.
