“Can’t imagine MI without Pollard”- Twitter reacts as Kieron Pollard retires from IPL

Kieron Pollard has represented Mumbai Indians for the last 13 years, and as the franchise released him ahead of the mini-auction, the West Indies all-rounder shared an emotional message on his social media platforms on November 15, to announce his decision of retiring from the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he won’t be bidding goodbye to the franchise forever, as he will continue with them as their batting coach.

Pollard was amongst those players who represented only one franchise (from 2010) throughout his IPL career. Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2008), Jasprit Bumrah (MI from 2013), and Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders from 2011) have also represented only one franchise. Pollard is also one of the few players who have played 100-plus IPL games.

It hasn’t been the easiest decision to make as I will keep playing for a few more years, but I understand that this incredible franchise which has achieved so much needs to transition and if I’m no longer to play for MI then I cannot see myself playing against MI either. Once an MI always an MI. I am immensely proud, honoured and blessed to have represented the biggest and most successful team in the IPL for the past 13 seasons,” Pollard wrote in the message.

I recall our first encounter when they welcomed me with open arms saying, “We are family”. Those were not just mere words, but demonstrated by their every action throughout my time with Mumbai Indians,” he added.

The 35-year-old has also played a key role in helping his team lift the coveted trophy five times. But his form slumped in the 2022 edition where he could manage only 144 runs in 11 matches at a mere strike rate of 107.46. Also, it was a forgettable season for MI, as they ended up at the bottom of the points table.
