Adam Zampa attemps mankading Tom Rogers in a BBL match

During the Big Bash League (BBL) match between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades, the former’s skipper Adam Zampa got involved in one of the controversial dismissals of cricket on Tuesday (January 2). He attempted to mankad Renegades’ Tom Rogers at the non-striker end as he left the crease early. But the third umpire overturned it.

The incident happened on the fourth ball of the last over when Mackenzie Harvey was on strike. As Rogers, at the non-striker’s end, left the crease early, Zampa dislodged the bails. The decision was taken upstairs and the third umpire overturned it because Zampa’s arm had “gone past the vertical”. That is, when Zampa dislodged the bails, his bowling arm had gone past the bowling crease.

Brett Lee was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket: “If he goes past where he’s meant to let go of the ball there…it’s deemed you can’t actually Mankad the batsman.”

What does MCC’s law say about mankading and when it can be overturned?

According to Marylebone Cricket Club‘s law, “The non-striker can be run out if he/she is out of his/her ground up until the moment the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball. That means when the arm gets to its highest point. The bowler is not entitled to go all the way around in the bowling action and then run the non-striker out.”

Mankading is one of the most controversial dismissals in cricket. It started when the legendary Vinoo Mankad dismissed Bill Brown in a similar fashion during India’s tour of Australia in 1948. That’s how mankad run-out got its name. Although it’s perfectly a legal dismissal according to MCC’s laws of cricket, the cricket fraternity has opposite views.
