WATCH: Video of Ravindra Jadeja applying cream on bowling finger triggers controversy
It also did not come under the suspicion of the match officials.
Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja
During Day 1 of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Inda’s left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja completed his 11th fifer. This helped his side skittle out the Aussies for a paltry 177 runs at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday (February 9).
However, a video involving Jadeja triggered controversy. In that video, Jadeja could be seen taking something from Mohammed Siraj and rubbing it on his bowling finger while being involved in a discussion with skipper Rohit Sharma.
A Twitter user asked former Australia captain Tim Paine about the video to which the latter replied with a one-word answer, “interesting,” which fueled the allegations.
“What do you think of this @tdpaine36 Looks like one player giving grippo to the bowler and him rubbing it all over his spinning finger to me. Thoughts?“- the Twitter user wrote.

Australia’s media outlet foxcricket.com.au also did a report on it and shared it on Twitter. Former England captain Michael Vaughan retweeted it with this caption: “What is it he is putting on his spinning finger? Never ever seen this #INDvs AUS“.

What did Ravindra Jadeja apply on his bowling finger?
Putting the controversial theories aside, sources told The Indian Express that Ravindra Jadeja was just applying an “ointment for callus finger“. The sources also confirmed that it is allowed in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) playing conditions. It also did not come under the suspicion of the match officials.
According to The Indian Express report, batsmen use gripping cream between overs to keep their moisturized, which is also allowed by the ICC. And those spinners who return to action after a long period may face some issues in their index finger. So to avoid the cracks, they use the cream.
Talking about the match, Australia opted to bat first after winning the toss, and with the help of Marnus Labuschagne’s 49, Steve Smith’s 37, Alex Carey’s 36, and Peter Handscomb’s 31, the visitors could reach just 177.
Apart from Jadeja’s fifer, Ravichandran Ashwin also scalped three wickets, while pacers Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj bagged one each. India are trailing by 100 runs and will start on Day 2 at 77/1. Rohit Sharma completed a fifty (56* off 69 balls), while KL Rahul became a victim of debutant Todd Murphy for 20 runs.
