Legendary cricketer Sir Curtly Ambrose opened up on recent comments made by Sanjay Manjrekar on Ravi Ashwin. The former West Indies cricketer mentioned that Manjrekar is entitled to present his views as “we all have our different opinions”.
Manjrekar sparked yet another controversy with his recent remarks on India spinner Ravi Ashwin. The 55-year-old revealed that he doesn’t rate Ravichandran Ashwin as an all-time great. He opined that the Tamil Nadu cricketer is yet to achieve exceptional records in the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries.
In the recent uploaded on his Youtube channel, The Curtly & Karishma Show, the former cricketer highlighted the following:
“We all have our different opinions. We all look at greatness in different ways. Sanjay Manjrekar was a wonderful cricketer in his time. He has his opinion of that, we all have our views. But, how do you define greatness? That is a good question.”
“Because sometimes, to be quite fair, we use the word greatness loosely. So, we have to be careful with how we define greatness. According to me, greatness is when a player can be very consistent over a period of time, for years, not one or two years.”
Ambrose further mentioned that all the players must be judged upon their performance at the end of their respective careers.
“Some guys can come into international cricket, and for two or three years, set the world on fire. And, for the next six to seven years, they do nothing. You cannot really judge on the first two or three years. It is over a period of time, through a whole career. At the end of your career, you can be judged if you were great or good or average,” he concluded.
Sanjay Manjrekar clarifies his comments on Ashwin
The cricketer-turned-commentator took to the popular microblogging website, Twitter, for clarifying his statements on Ravi Ashwin.
“All-time great is the highest praise and acknowledgement given to a cricketer. Cricketers like Don Bradman, Sobers, Gavaskar, Tendulkar, Virat, etc, are all-time greats in my book. With due respect, Ashwin is not quite there as an all-time great yet. #AllTimeGreatExplained,” Manjrekar tweeted.
However, Ashwin had a light-hearted response to Manjrekar‘s tweet. The 34-year-old replied to him with a dialogue from the popular Tamil movie ‘Aparachith.’
Ashwin replied: “Apdi Solladha Da Chaari, Manasellam Valikirdhu.” (Don’t say things like that, it hurts)
