Bronny James has completed two years in the NBA. After a cardiac arrest in 2023, James made a remarkable recovery and was medically cleared to be eligible for the 2024 NBA draft.
With LeBron James on the team, the Los Angeles Lakers drafted James Jr. with the 55th pick. The two of them became the first father-son duo to play together in the NBA.
However, the young star has struggled for minutes and hasn’t been in the rotation in his first two seasons. He has made only 69 regular-season appearances since donning the Lakers jersey.
While he has created historic moments alongside his father on the court, life in the NBA has not been easy for the 22-year-old. To make matters worse, being the son of LeBron has seen Bronny in the headlines far too often.
Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas called out the NBA media for unfairly criticizing James and ignoring the first overall pick in his draft class, Zaccharie Risacher.
They were too busy bashing Bronny for nepotism that they forgot there was a number one pick they never even mentioned… Zaccharie. He got drafted number one. Y’all went straight to the 55th. You killed him, and a whole number one pick was just chilling and relaxing.

Gilbert Arenas is well known for wild and hot takes. But he does make a valid point. While Bronny James was never expected to be a top prospect, as he was a second-round pick, the lack of attention to Risacher being a first overall pick is a matter of concern.
Being LeBron’s son, it was natural for the media to discuss Bronny. However, a number one pick comes with immense pressure and expectations. But Risacher getting a pass shows the pattern media analysts follow.
Bronny James is focused on building his defensive identity
The 2026-27 campaign will be a pivotal one in Bronny’s NBA career. For the first time since entering the league, he will not be sharing the locker room with his father as LeBron joined the Philadelphia 76ers in the summer.

While Bronny has struggled to make an impact for the Lakers, he showed flashes of defensive potential in last season’s playoffs. Although his role has been very limited in his first two seasons, head coach JJ Redick and the organization trust Bronny and even declined a few trade offers for him.
Following a training session, James revealed that Redick’s staff has emphasized full-court pressure as one of his primary responsibilities heading into the new campaign.
I think just building on defensive instinct, how I was in the playoffs, picking up full court, taking up the ball forward and emphasizing that. So I’ve been one of the guys that is in the every possession, every time I get a bucket, just picking it up forward.

Bronny James signed a four-year deal with the Lakers in 2024. With the 2027-28 campaign as a team option, he will need to show significant improvement this season as the Lakers begin a new era after LeBron James’ departure.
Zaccharie Risacher has plenty to prove next season
Risacher has not lived up to the expectations of a first overall pick. Drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, the French international failed to convince the organization that he had what it takes to be a franchise superstar.
After two poor campaigns, the Hawks traded him to the Dallas Mavericks this summer. The 21-year-old was surprised by the move, but a change of scenery may help after a rough start to his NBA career.
The Mavs are high on Risacher. He may not be their main star, as that tag belongs to last year’s number one pick, Cooper Flagg. However, Risacher has started in all three of the Mavs’ preseason games and has shown some promise on both ends of the court.
With expectations lower and the Mavs not needing him as the centerpiece of the organization, Risacher could benefit. While there is still plenty of room for improvement, the Mavericks could help him unlock his untapped potential.
