In Short
  • Shedeur Sanders aims to secure the starting quarterback position for the Cleveland Browns in training camp.
  • Deion Sanders plans to meet with Browns head coach Todd Monken to discuss strategies for utilizing Shedeur's skills.
  • Shedeur's rookie season was challenging, with limited playing time and no favorable treatment from the coaching staff.

Shedeur Sanders is gearing up for his second season with the Cleveland Browns. Sanders has a great shot starting for the AFC North club in week one, but he must outperform Deshaun Watson in training camp.

Sanders’ first year ended in disappointment. He started third on the depth chart and did not see the field until Week 11, coming on for the final few snaps of the game. The Browns made him the starter ahead of next week’s game. Sanders posted a 3-4 record.

After the season ended, the Browns fired Kevin Stefanski and hired former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as the new head coach. Even though Monken has a soft spot for Sanders, he won’t hand him the QB1 job on a plate. Sanders must earn it in the training camp.

Before the camp kicks off, Deion Sanders, the head coach of Shedeur’s alma mater, the University of Colorado, plans to speak with Monken, not as Shedeur’s father, but as his coach. The Hall of Fame cornerback believes he can give some valuable pointers to Monken on how to make better use of Sanders’s skills as a quarterback.

I want to meet [Todd Monken]. Because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going. That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it. Even a guy like Travis Hunter being drafted to Jacksonville, and I’ve had him for the last three [seasons], don’t you think you would want to talk to me to ask me what gets him going?

Deion Sanders said on Garrett Bush’s podcast

The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted 2024 Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, who campaigned to play both sides of the park. Initially, the new Jaguars coaching team wasn’t so sure about whether Hunter could play snaps as a receiver and a corner. But eventually agreed to Hunter’s wishes.

Hunter caught 28 passes for 298 yards and scored one touchdown while also making 15 combined tackles and defending 3 passes. However, Hunter’s season ended after he picked up a knee injury in practice prior to the week eight fixture.

Deion Sanders says Shedeur Sanders “went through hell” in his rookie season

In Sanders’ final year of college, Colorado finished second in the division and played a bowl game after a long time. Sanders finished in the top 10 of the Heisman voting.

Analysts such as Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay projected him as a first-round draft pick. They were proven wrong. Sanders went undrafted during the first two days. According to Coach Prime, Shedeur declined to play for the Ravens because he wanted to join a club where he could start games immediately. On day three, the Browns drafted him 144th overall.

Sanders did not receive any favorable treatment from the coaching team. In fact, sources say he was deprived of any reps with either the first or the reserves.

Sanders showed a glimpse of his skills in the offseason, but it wasn’t enough to convince the coaches to at least award him the backup job behind Joe Flacco. Eventually, when he got the job, Sanders put together a mixed bag tape.

When [Shedeur] takes off his shirt, I see the scars on his back that he’s been through hell, but he’s made it through hell. He kept going, and he [has] matured, not like he was a child, but he matured spiritually. You can’t force this. If it ain’t your time, it ain’t your time.
