“Don’t you want to win the constructors?,” Ron Dennis reveals Alonso’s Sarcastic Dig at McLaren Signing Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton signed for Formula One team, McLaren in 2007. He quickly rose to fame after he captured the World championship in just his second season in 2008. However, his McLaren teammate, Fernando Alonso was not quite impressed with the signing of Lewis Hamilton in 2007.

Alonso was dissatisfied over the signing of Lewis Hamilton and even questioned if McLaren wanted to win a constructors championship after they signed Lewis Hamilton. Former McLaren CEO, Ron Dennis revealed Alonso’s initial reactions to Hamilton joining the team in 2007.

“I went to Fernando,” he said during the interview. “And I said, Fernando, by the way, I’ve decided to put Lewis in the car. And he thought for a while and he said, Don’t you want to win the constructors?,” he added.

Ron Dennis stated that he looks back and smiles on how wrong Alonso was regarding Hamilton. Not did he only challenge Alonso at McLaren, winning the 2008 F1 World Championship but went on to win six more titles, later with Mercedes, taking his total tally to seven F1 championships.

“He didn’t feel that Lewis was going to be much of a threat or much of a points scorer, which I look back on and smile. Because it was on, you know, how wrong he was,” said Dennis.

Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton will be re-united on the racing circuit for the next season as the Spaniard returns from a two year sabbatical to join his championship winning team, Renault. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton will be the fourth youngest sportsman to be knighted by Elizabeth II and will be the fourth F1 racer and third F1 world champion on which this is honor will be conferred upon.
