  • Adebayo's injury significantly impacted the Heat's performance, leading to a narrow overtime loss to the Hornets.
  • LaMelo Ball apologized for the incident, claiming it was unintentional and a reaction to being hit in the head.

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra was absolutely livid at Lamelo Ball on Tuesday night. The Play-In tournament game was very dramatic to say the least.

Spoelstra did not hold back as he criticized Ball’s dangerous play that led to Bam Adebayo’s back injury during the Miami Heat-Charlotte Hornets game. Spoelstra expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating and believed Ball’s conduct warranted ejection.

I didn’t see it, but I don’t think it’s cute. I don’t think it’s funny. I think it’s a stupid, dangerous play. Obviously, our best player was out. I’m not making an excuse—the Hornets played great and made those plays down the stretch. We had our opportunities to win. I just think that’s a shame. You should be penalized for that. I don’t think that belongs in the game—tripping guys, shenanigans.

Erik Spoelstra said in his post-match press conference

Losing Bam Adebayo early in the second quarter was a huge setback to the Heat’s chances, which eventually cost them the game. Lamelo Ball swiped at Adebayo’s legs causing him to fall and injuring his lower back, sidelining him for the rest of the contest.

It was a disappointing exit for Bam Adebayo as he was the team’s best player over the last few weeks that saw him etch his name in the league’s record books.

The 28-year-old got up on his under his own power, which is a promising sign for Heat fans. However, he did walk gingerly into the locker room for observation. The Heat missed his defensive prowess in the second half as they missed his ability to guard every position on the floor.

Erik Spoelstra criticized the officials for not handling the situation properly.

Erik Spoelstra did not mince his words and felt the questionable play deserved an ejection. In the end, it came back to haunt them as they struggled without their defensive anchor.

Spoelstra said that one of the officials on the crew, Curtis Blair, was in the vicinity of the play and held him accountable for not making a call.

Curtis [Blair] was there; it’s his responsibility to see that, and if it’s not his responsibility, then Zach [Zarba] got to see it. Somebody has to catch that. [Ball] should have been thrown out of the game for that. I don’t know him from anyone. There’s just no place in the game for that. Obviously, it took Bam out of the game.

Erik Spoelstra blamed the officials in his press conference

Unfortunately for the Heat, their hopes of being in the playoffs have come to an end. The Heat nation will be expecting some big calls to be made after an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign.

Lamelo Ball apologized for his questionable play

It is never a pleasant sight to see a player go down to injury in a high-stakes match. But that is exactly what happened on Tuesday night. The injury to Adebayo hurt the Heat as they succumbed to a thrilling 127-126 overtime loss to the Hornets.

While Lamelo Ball was under the scanner for his play that led to Adebayo’s injury, he did put on a show as he recorded 30 points, five rebounds and 10 assists in a must-win game. In his post-match press conference, Ball apologized for his poor play in the second quarter.

I apologize on that one. I got hit in the head, didn’t really know where I was, but I’mma check on him and see if he’s okay and everything.

Lamelo Ball said after the game

While it was not a long explanation, it is the first thing Hornets fans needed to hear from Ball after all the scrutiny across social media. The Hornets guard explained that the dirty play was more of a reaction after getting hit on the head and it was never intentional.

The win sees the Hornets move on to the next round of the Play-In tournament, while the Heat are done for the season. Hornets await the loser of the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers game as they look to make their first playoffs appearance in 10 years.
