Worldwide, the eSports scene is booming right now. Almost every major eSports tournament of major games receives a prize pool of millions of dollars. Furthermore, as the popularity of games increases, so does the scale at which they perfoliate. Additionally, even big platforms like the Asian Games are recognizing eSports. Recently, Team Korea and Faker won the gold medal in League of Legends at the Asian Games. Furthermore, this gold medal has exempted them from mandatory military service.
League of Legends (LoL) is a popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game. In addition, one of the seven esports medal events at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China, was League of Legends. Moreover, many teams played League of Legends at the Asian Games 2023 at the China Hangzhou Esports Centre from September 25 to September 29. Furthermore, the team to come out on top after days of fierce and grueling matches was Team Korea, Faker’s team. Their match was nerve-wracking and kept fans on the edge of their seats. Team Korea and Faker bags gold medal in League Of Legends at the Asian Games and received military exemption
Team Korea won the League of Legends tournament at the 19th Asian Games on September 29. After winning the last game, the squad earned the gold medal! It was an important victory since it granted the team’s main player, Faker, an exemption from mandatory Military service. The country’s conscription system forces all physically capable men in South Korea to enlist in the army, navy, or air force. Citizens typically see this required duty as a major commitment and a rite of passage.
However, after bagging the gold medal on such a huge platform, Faker, the team’s star player, wouldn’t have to go through this rite of passage. So this win is really important for Faker and Team Korea!
In the final round, Korea defeated Chinese Taipei by a score of 2-0 to win the gold medal. This team displayed amazing expertise. Their most difficult match came against China in the semifinals, which they won by the same margin. Notably, eSports were officially recognized and valued in the world of competitive sports for the first time at the Asian Games this year when they were included as a medal event.
Also, this exemption stems from how athletes who contend and win at a huge platform are exempted from this service. As a reward for their services to raising the nation’s status on the international scene, those who win an Olympic medal or a gold medal at the Asian Games may have their required service requirements reduced. Due to its recent designation as a medal event, eSports are now included in this recognition along with conventional sports. This shows how far eSports and video games have spread their wings!
