“I can’t make any guarantees,” Nadeshot responds to rumors of 100 Thieves returning to Counter-Strike
The 100 Thieves founder discussed the state of eSports and the organization's return to CS:GO.
100 Thieves is a well-known esports organization that has achieved tremendous success in various games. These include games like League of Legends, Valorant, Fortnite, and more. However, the team does not have a storied history in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The organization first entered the CS:GO scene in December 2017 by acquiring the former Immortals lineup. The lineup included players like Henrique ‘HEN1’ Teles and Lincoln ‘fnx’ Lau. However, 100 Thieves exited the scene just a month later, leaving fans disappointed. Later, in October 2019, they picked up the Australian team Renegades. Renegades included players like Aaron “AZR” Ward, Justin “jks” Savage, and Joakim “jkaem” Myrbostad. However, they once again exited the CS:GO scene a year later, and since then, have not been involved in the game.
Despite this, many within the organization are fans of the game. This includes the founder of 100 Thieves, Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag, a former professional Call of Duty player. “I would love to be in Counter-Strike,” Nadeshot has expressed his love for Counter-Strike, and his desire to return to the game in the future. However, he also mentioned that it might not be financially feasible anytime soon.
Nadeshot explains the current state of eSports
“Right now, the state of esports, everything’s so expensive. There’s been rightsizing when it comes to player salaries and the expectation that agents and managers have of what we’re actually willing to pay.” According to Nadeshot, the state of esports is expensive, and there have been rightsizing in player salaries. This has made it challenging for organizations to make profits from their esports teams. This is especially true for games like CS:GO, which require significant investments.
Furthermore, Nadeshot pointed out that North American CS was in shambles when they exited the game for the second time. This made it difficult for the team to justify staying in the game, especially when compared to other games that the organization competes in.
However, Nadeshot also mentioned that he would never write off the possibility of getting back into the esport. “So, unless something changes drastically around the economics of what the expectation is from the organizations, I can’t make any guarantees.” He believes that if there is more flexibility in the future, and the financials make sense, they would consider making a move.
Nadeshot also compared CS:GO to some of the other games that the organization competes in. He pointed out that they made more money from sticker sales in CS:GO than they did in years over different leagues. This shows that there is still a lot of potential for the organization to make profits in CS:GO. The financials just have to make sense.
100 Thieves does not have a storied history in CS:GO, but the organization and its founder are fans of the game. However, the financials and logistics of the game make it challenging for the team to stay involved. Nonetheless, Nadeshot is optimistic about the future. He believes that if there is more flexibility, and the timing is right, they will consider making a move back into the game.
